Bio: Garvin, Robert--"shivaree" 10-17-1879
Source: The Clark Republican and Press Date: 10-17-1879 A crowd of young men called at the residence of Thos. Garvin last Monday night and proceeded to “shivarr” Mr. Robert Garvin, who had recently been married and who with his bride was stopping at his father’s. Robert felt and though that he had manifested the right disposition toward those who felt any real interest in his marriage, and did not propose to be bulldozed into treating anybody who happened to feel thirsty at that unreasonable hour. After enduring the racket awhile he arose to remonstrate, which ended in blows between himself and some of the serenaders. He had some half dozen of them arrested, the next day and the case is still pending at this writing. There was nothing malicious, originally, on the part of the mernaders, but they were following a very vulgar custom which ought to be rebuked by law if it cannot be by popular opinion. |
