Allen, George W. (9 AUG 1851 - 18 JUL 1913)

On Friday afternoon, July 18, 1913, at about two o'clock in the afternoon, G. W. Allen committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a revolver.

He was born in Dodge Co., Wis. on Aug. 9, 1851, came to Clark County in 1871 and was married to Miss Harriet Halleck on Dec. 25, 1877, who died Nov. 5, 1910. On June 11, 1912, he was married to Mrs. Margaret Pinkerton, who survives him.

Mr. Allen arrived here on Thursday evening from Waupaca and visited at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. R. Miles, and on Friday morning in loving remembrance of his first wife and daughter, who are buried in the cemetery here, he strewed their graves with flowers. He talked and visited with acquaintances here, attended to matters in the bank and ate his dinner as if nothing was about to happen that would take him from this world of trouble. He seemed in his usual good spirit and there was nothing in his outward actions from which to borrow a suspicion that he attempted taking his own life. At about two o'clock, however, a shot was fired but no one hearing it guessed the meaning. A little later his sister went into the front yard of his own home and there discovered him in the grove near the house lying on his face with a bullet hole in his temple and the revolver still in his hand, a success….(some of the obit was missing on my copy)

….sense with strong convictions, and a candid, out spoken temper, eminently fitted to the mould the rude elements of pioneer society into form and consistency, and aid in raising a high standard of citizenship in our young and then growing state. How much this community owes him it is impossible to estimate, though it would be a grateful task to trace his influence through some more direct channels.

A year ago Mr. Allen was married a second time and has since lived happily with the widow that still survives him. In addition to Mrs. Allen he leaves one son, who resides on the Mexican plantation and one sister in Loyal.

The funeral services were held on last week Wednesday at the residence by his request at two o'clock and was largely attended by his old friends in this vicinity and abroad. The remains were buried by the side of his wife and daughter in the Loyal Cemetery.
