The sudden death of Mr. A. J. Calkins Thanksgiving day comes as a shock to his relatives and the many who knew him as a friend. Though not having been in the best of health his death came unexpectedly about three o’clock Thursday afternoon. He had been out of doors shoveling the snow from the walks just a short time before he was found with the life gone from his body, cause by heart failure.

Alonzo James Calkins was born at Melrose, Jackson Co., Wis. Dec. 7, 1853, and passed away at his home Nov. 27, 1924, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 20 days. When he was twelve years of age he moved with his parents to Des Moines, Iowa, and six years later moved to Bloomer, Wis. On May 25, 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Craig. Two children were born to this union, a son Herbert and a daughter Charlotte Gertrude, now Mrs. T. J. LaLonde of Milwaukee. From Bloomer he moved with his wife and family to Boyd, where he started his work with the Wis. Central Railroad. From Boyd they moved to Abbotsford, where they have lived for the past twenty-two years. Mr. Calkins was employed by the Soo Line and its predecessors for 33 years and six months and was put on the R. R. pension roll Dec. 7, 1921.

Mr. Calkins was a devoted husband and father, and his willingness to help others and cheerful kindliness won many friends for him.

He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, one son and a daughter, Mrs. T. J. LaLonde of Milwaukee, two brothers, Albert Calkins of Chetek and Jerome of Stanley, two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Craig of Wis. Rapids and Mrs. Iona Huff of Gary, Ind., a grandson Harold Severance, and great-granddaughter, Mary Beth Severance of Milwaukee.

Fuenral services were conducted by the Masonic Order of Abbotsford, at the home at one-thirty Monday afternoon and at the Presbyterian Church at two o’clock. Interment was made in the Abbotsford Cemetery.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. Jerome Calkins of Stanley, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Severance and baby daughter and Mr. and Mrs. T. J. LaLonde of Milwaukee, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Phipps of Chippewa Falls.
