Freak Darling, accompanied by his wife, went to Sparta on last Monday to have a surgical operation performed on his neck by Dr. Gage.

On last Thursday morning Geo. A. Austin found one of his most valuable cows dead in the yard. The only cause assigned was that she hooked to death by the other cattle.

On last Saturday morning, May 31st, a murder was coolly committed in the town of Sherwood Forest, that created quite a sensation in this city, as both the murderer and his victim are well known here. The facts, as brought out by the testimony, as the inquest held before Justice L. M. Sturrdevant on Sunday morning, are in substance as follows: Hugh Perkins and Isaac Meddaugh, , who, until recently, were old friends and neighbors, were brought into a quarrel on Friday afternoon about some neighborhood gossip, and during the altercation Perkins threatened to slap a young boy, Jerry Doughty, who, it had been said, had been employed by Meddaugh to watch Perkins, when Meddaugh told Perkins that he would have to slap him or one nearer his size. The quarrel ended without blows but each was stirred up with bitter feelings. On the following day, last Saturday, Meddaugh and his brother Robert went to Perkin’s mill for a load of lumber, which being loaded on a wagon they both went into the mill, Meddaugh to have Perkins measure the lumber and the brother for a drink of water, and when Meddaugh approached within eight feet of Perkins, Perkins said to him, “get out of my mill I want no row with you to-day,” at the same time drawing a revolver fired at Meddaugh who fell, and also fired a second shot at the brother who escaped unhurt. The ball fired at Meddaugh entered the left breast, penetrating the lung and severing pulmonary artery, causing death in from ten to fifteen minutes. The deceased leaves a wife and two small children. The post mortem examination was made by Dr. J. A. Templeton. Meddaught was twenty-seven years of age. SNANONVILLE (?) NARRATIONS: Geo. Hilbert, aged 14 years, was buried on the 25th. His funeral was attended by the Good Templars and Juvenile Temple in regalia, he being a member of both orders. The attendance was the largest ever witnessed at this place, the procession being over a mie in length. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

There was a funeral on June 1st here of the infant child of James and Alice Coats, aged 10 months.

Mr. Louis Rustid is just recovering from a severe attack of pleurisy.
