Source: The Clark Republican and Press Date: 5-21-1885 THORP TOPICS: The town of Withee now own, a safe of the Mosler-Balman manufacture. While placing the safe in position in town clerk McCutcheon’s office, the floor gave away, precipitating the safe and workmen into the basement, and necessitating the use of jack-screws in order to raise the floor to its former level. No lives were lost. “Uncle” Dan Conklin, aged about seventy years, a superannuated employee of the Eau Claire Lumber Co., has been on a prolonged spree for a week past, and on one evening was obliged to sleep out of doors with nothing but the blue vault of heaven for a winding sheet. If we have saloon keepers who would sell whisky to one who has tendered his second childhood and needs every penny he has to keep him from becoming a county charge, why do not our town boards prohibit the sale of liquors to him? So long as our town boards neglect their duty in these respects, the town and not the county, ought to bear the sequential expenses of such negligence. Geo. H. Lusk has lately painted his house a pea-green color which shows off to a good advantage. CHRISTIE CACKLINGS: Thomas Chadwick is laying the foundation of a fine barn, which will be quite an ornament to his splendid farm. G. E. Zatder left for Erie, Ill., the home of his parents, the fore part of the week. Ed’s kindly eye and genial countenance will be missed by his many friends in this section. Mr. A. Tuttle’s house was burned with nearly all of its contents last Friday afternoon. LONGWOOD ITEMS: Mrs. P. A. Lantz started Monday for a visit among friends and relatives in Michigan. W. E. Sawyer, of Milwaukee, was up looking after his interests here last week. G. W. Prentice spent the greater part of last week in the north woods, looking after logging interest. John Murphy has put in an appearance after an absence of two weeks at Eau Claire We learn that our worthy host, Ed. Smith, intends to go north with Messrs. Eastman and Dingley of Greenwood, on their fishing expedition. |
