Mr. E. T. Burch and daughter, returned from Galesville and La Crosse, last week. Mr. Burch has been a little “under the weather”, guess he had too good a time.

Miss Hattie Andrews entertained a large company of her young friends last Tuesday afternoon, the occasion being her birthday. A pleasant time was reported by all. Miss Hattie was made happy by many nice presents presented with the kind wishes of her little friends.

Considerable excitement was raised in town last Tuesday morning when Mr. Youmans came in from his place about two miles east of the city and announced that four bears were in his field and requested the valiant Nimrods to go out and help gather them in. “Then there was mounting in hot hast the steed,” and the clattering Carr borrowed a Winchester and hurried to the front ready to wade in gore if he could “bear” it, but the bears could not bear it, and left before he arrived on the field of action, all except one little cub, which became separated from the old one, and fell an easy victim to one Mr. Randall , who cornered him in the woods back of Mrs. Thos. Reed’s house. For two long hours the hunters ranged through the woods, but all to no purpose. The bears had other engagements, and would not stay for an interview. They are quite numerous this fall, and last night a large one killed a calf on the Hosely farm a few miles north of town. Mr. Fred. Klopf and Sim. Reineking were coming along the road just about dark and heard the calf bleating, and went over into the woods to see what was the matter, when old brain notified them they were not wanted there, and they took the hint and left. To-night a party well armed will watch for him near the carcass, with the hope of bringing him in.

TALES FROM THORP: L. O. Garrison is erecting a fine barn on his lot, in the village.

Ole Anderson has sold his house and lot at the depot, to R. A. Burss.

Edmund Burke, bought a lot of E. H. Boardman, and will erect a house there-on.

John McGrogan, our bus and drayman, has the frame up and enclosed for an addition to his dwelling.

Jas. Disbro, the hoop manufacturer, who has been absent on business, returned on Saturday evening last.

H. Greenhagen, Of Oshkosh, has leased a building at the depot, and will put in a stock of boots and shoes at once.

Stephen Moore, of Popple River Bridge, an Uncle of John Moore, of this town, was in the village on Monday.

Messrs Nye. Lusk & Hudson have ordered a stock of goods for their new store, which is rapidly nearing completion.

J. H. McClure, adjuster of losses for the St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Co. was in town last week adjusting the loss on the house of J. B. Clark, lately destroyed by fire.
