--------- Hamel, Ort S. (JUN 1899 - 16 APR 1922)

Ort Segil Hamel, aged twenty-two years and ten months, residing with his mother, Mrs. Louis Hamel in the village of Maplehurst, Taylor Co., accidentally shot and fatally wounded himself at his home on Sunday afternoon. Hamel was at home alone, cleaning a .32-caliber automatic revolver when the accident occurred, and after the shot he ran a distance of about fifteen rods to a neighbor's home and told what had happened. He said he was in the act of cleaning the revolver when it fell from his hands, striking the floor and discharging its contents into his body just below the lower right rib. He lived about twenty odd minutes, just long enough to tell of the calamity.

Mrs. Louis Hamel, his mother, had recently gone to Lincoln, Neb., for a visit with relatives, and the young man had been at home alone during her absence.

Ort Hamel was a young man of high character, and during his residence in Maplehurst had gained very good and numerous friends who will miss him in social activities. He is survived by four brothers, three sisters and a widowed mother, all of who came home to attend the funeral.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the home at one o'clock, Rev. French of Bethel College (Wis.), officiating. The choir was composed of four young men, also students of Bethel College, who sang at the services and paid their last rites to the departed. Burial was made in the town of Maplehurst Cemetery.
