PIONEER EDUCATOR OF CLARK COUNTY IS BURIED FRIDAY

(By News Herald Correspondent) Sat. Evening, Marshfield News-Herald, 29 May 1937.

Thorp--Funeral services for Hixon M. Mead, 63, Thorp mail carrier for many years, who died as the result of a heart aliment Monday morning at his home in the village were held Wednesday afternoon at the Bogumill funeral home. Members of the Odd Fellows' Lodge officiated at the rites, and burial took place in the Thorp East cemetery.

Mr. Mead was born March 5, 1874, at Longwood and attended school therea and at Neillsville. For eight years he taught county schools. In 1898 he joined the military band at Marshfield and served in the Spanish-American war.

In 1909 Mr. Mead moved to Thorp where he accepted a position as mail clerk. Two years later he became a mail carrier on route 3 out of Thorp, and held the position for many years.

Active in music and lodge circles, Mr. Mead was a member of Thorp's "Old Time Band" at the time of his death, and was an active member of the I. O. O. F. Forest Queen lodge No. 321, Thorp.

Mrs. Mead survives him, as do six children, Russel, Greenwood; Mrs. Steve (Mary) Kettner, Rhinelander; Donald, Rerie, Idaho; Maurice, Thorp; Mrs. Eldred (Virginia) Winger; Lublin; and Mrs. Phillip (June) Welton, Duluth, Minn. Fifteen grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Herman Tiedeman, Thorp; and two brothers, Fred Mead, Sturgeon Valley, Saskatchewan, Canada; and Byron Mead, Wenatchee, Wash., also survive.
