VARNO LAINE WEDS EAST CHICAGO GIRL

The wedding of Mary Ellen Ellis, attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Ellis of East Chicago, Ill., and Varno E. Laine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. Laine of Withee, on Friday, May 10, came as a surprise to their many friends.

The marriage was solemninzed in the presence of members of the family, at the home of the bride's parents. At the hour of four p.m., the Reverend William N. Where united the couple in marriage before an improvisied alter of ferns, palms and white peonies.

The bride was lovely in a red and white silk afternoon ensemble, with which she wore white accessories and a corsage of white roses and lilies of the valley. For her only attendant, she chose a lifelong friend, Miss Ellen Swanson, also of East Chicato. Miss Swanson was attired in a powder blue and beige ensemble with which she combined matching accessories. Her corsage was composed of Talisman roses.

The bridegroom chose as his attendant, Robert Reynolds, with whom he has resided while living in Gary.

Immediately following the ceremony, a wedding dinner was served in the Victorian room of the Palmer House, for those present at the wedding.

Mrs. Laine, who moved here with her parents from St. Louis, Mo., a few years ago, received her preliminary education in various schools in the East, and completed her schooling in University City, a suburb of St. Louis. For the past two years she has held a secretarial position in the treasury department of the Pure Oil company in Chicago.

Mr. Laine attended the University of Wisconsin, and received his degree from Northwestern university, where he was affiliated with the Beta Sigma Pi fraternity. He is presently associated with the Gary Heat, Light and Water company.

The young couple will be at home to their friends, after June 10, at 6139 South Kenwood Avenue, in Chicago.
