Agnes Matheson

Agnes E. Matheson, age 90, of Portage, and formerly of Waukesha and Neillsville, died Monday, Nov. 24, at the Columbia Health care Center in Wyocena.

Agnes Elaine Evanson was born in Argile, Wis. on Feb. 28, 1913. She moved to the Greenwood area as a child. On April 30, 1937, she was united in marriage to Arne H. Matheson. Agnes lived in Southern California during World War II, where she worked for the telephone company. She returned to Neillsville in 1946 and remained there until 1967, when the family moved to Waukesha. In Waukesha, Agnes worked as Deputy City Treasurer. They moved to Portage in 1986, and their winters were spent in Apache Junction, Ariz. from 1974 until 1990, when Arne died.

Agnes was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliaries, the Order of the Eastern Star, WBCCI-Indian Head Unit Airstream Travel Club, and the Trinity United Church of Christ.

She is survived by a daughter, Sheri Matheson, of Portage; two brothers, Orville (Frances) Evanson of Wausau, and Rolland (Dawn) Evanson, of Tomahawk; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Agnes was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at the Port-Axtell Community Funeral Home in Portage with Pastor Vicki Warren officiating. Interment will follow at a later date at the Neillsville City Cemetery.
