10 Years Ago, March 18, 1993 Three Stanley - Boyd High School students, Janelle Bielecki, Stacy Wirth and Dana Wundrow, were selected to participate in the annual Dorian Band Festival held at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

25 Years Ago, March 16, 1978 Attending Badger Boys State this year are David Plombon and Mike Smoczyk. Badger Girls State representative from Stanley-Boyd High School will be Diane Licht.

Two new police officers, James O. Foss and Thomas L. Thornton, have been hired to the Stanley Police force.

40 Years Ago, March 21, 1963 Ade Washburn, head basketball coach at Stanley-Boyd Senior High School for the past eight years, is stepping down from his coaching position at the end of the present school term.

50 Years Ago, March 19, 1953 On or about the last of October, 1952, school patrolman James Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hunt, was on duty at his post, located on Highway 29 and the junction with Franklin Street, when a diesel freight train came into town from the west. When it had already passed the depot, Hunt observed five small children standing directly in its path, apparently petrified with terror, at the Franklin Street crossing. With an utter disregard for his own safety, Hunt dashed to the crossing, and had just cleared the last child from the tracks when the train passed, the margin was so close, eye witnesses were sure he had been struck until the train passed and he was seen standing on the other side. For this reason a number of people are financing a trip to Washington, D. C. to attend a school patrolman’s convention for “Jimmie” Hunt.

60 Years Ago, March 19, 1943 Some 3200 chicks were destroyed in a fire at Frazee’s Chick Hatchery Sunday afternoon. The fire is believed to have been caused by defective wiring.

A widespread feeling prevails among the men and officers in the Pacific that they are about ready to go after the Japanese in a big way. The results at Guadalcanal and Bismarck Sea have revelaed the strength of the US Army in comparison with the Japanese, and it is not favorable for the enemy.

70 Years Ago, March 17, 1933 Arthur Natzke, who formerly operated a cheese factory between Merrill and Wausau, has purchased the Peterson cheese factory at Junction, moved his family here and intends to buy, boost and make cheese for the Stanley Country.

100 Years Ago, March 21, 1903 Cashier Hoidahl at the Northwestern Lumber Company office has paid over the counter something like $100,000 during the past week. All the camps of this company broke at the close of last week and the town has been full of sociable lumberjacks. Hoidahl informs us that never before have the season’s checks averaged as large as they have been this year. The festive lumberman fares better than he did in the days of low tariff and cheap lumber. He comes out of the woods with a hundred dollars or more to show for his season’s work, over and above all expenses. He may not keep it long, but he has a good time while it lasts. There have been frequent arguments among these gentlemen and Chief of Police Carpenter as to who was running the old town anyway during the past few days, but breaches of the peace have been few and the atmosphere has been mild.

Edward Humber, Bloomer, has purchased the saloon of Frank Schmidt, taking possession last Saturday.
