Phillips, Leonidas (10 JUL 1835 - 14 APR 1917)

Another old veteran of the Civil War answered the final roll call last Saturday forenoon, when Leonidas Phillips passed away at the home of his son George in the town of Cleveland. Mr. Phillips has been ill for a week with pneumonia and from the first it was known that his chances for recovery were slight. Nearly all the members of his family were at his bedside when the end came. The funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon and the burial was in the Mentor Cemetery. Rev. Witherbee officiated.

Leonidas Phillips was born July 10, 1835, in Onondaga Co., N.Y. He came with his parents to Wisconsin when about eight years of age, locating at Milwaukee. After spending a year at Milwaukee, the family moved to Oconomowoc, where he grew to manhood.

Mr. Phillips served as a private in Co. A., 28th Regiment, Wis. Volunteers, during the Civil War, and was ever spoken of by his comrades in arms as a faithful soldier. He served in several battles, one being Gettysburg. Nov. 26, 1870, he was united in marriage with Miss Louisa Raether. They lived happily as husband and wife until death entered the household last June, and took the helpmate from his side. Five sons and four daughters are mourning the death of a devoted father, viz.: George, Ernest, Clarence, Charles and William, all but the latter residing in this vicinity; Mrs. Carrie Woodford of Humbird, Mrs. Ella Herrien of Neillsville, Mrs. Mina Eldridge of Montana, Mrs. Della Jungham of Fort Atkinson. A brother, George Phillips of Neillsville, and a sister, Mrs. Minverva Seeman of Kansas, also survive him. Since his marriage Mr. Phillips has resided the greater part of the time in the vicinity of Humbird and Osseo. At the latter place he owned a farm which he operated until advancing age required him to cease. He was a quiet, unassuming citizen, and had a large circle of friends.
