Obit: Preisig, Ernest (1897 - 1917)
Surnames: PREISIG SCHNEIDER ---------Source: HUMBIRD ENTERPRISE (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) 05/12/1917 --------- Preisig, Ernest (18 JUN 1897 - 8 MAY 1917) The body of Private Ernest Preisig, whose untimely death was chronicled in last week's issue, arrived from Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on Tuesday morning, and was taken at once to the home of his brother Jacob, east of the village (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) The funeral services were held at the Reformed Church the afternoon of the same day, Rev. D. Grether officiating. The church was filled with citizens who gathered to pay the final tribute of respect to the deceased soldier, and on many business places and homes the national emblem was displayed, and stores were closed during the hour of the funeral. Many floral pieces covered the rosewood casket which bore the young man in his khaki uniform. Six members of Co. A acted as pallbearers. Burial was in the Mentor Cemetery. Ernest Preisig was born in Switzerland June 18, 1897, and came to America three years ago, living the most of the time with his brother. He attended the short course of the Neillsville High School, and when the guards were called for border duty, enlisted in Co. A. Just before the company returned home he enlisted as a bugler in Batter C., 7th Regt. Field Artillery. Death ensued after but a short illness of blood poisoning, following a septic throat, on May 8, 1917. There are left to mourn his death his brother, Jacob Preisig of this place, the only relative in this country; his parents, one sister and one brother in Switzerland. Ernest was a bright young man and a general favorite with his acquaintances, both in and out of the army. Jacob Schneider, a brother-in-law of Jacob Preisig, , was here from New Glarus to attend the funeral. |
