Obit: Hickman, Smith (1840 - 1918)
Surnames: HICKMAN TRAVIS WELLS MCKEETH ---------Source: HUMBIRD ENTERPRISE (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) 05/25/1918 --------- Hickman, Smith (10 JUN 1840 - 19 MAY 1918) Smith Hickman died quite suddenly at his home north of the village (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) last Sunday. He was found by Dan Pierce, who had gone to Mr. Hickman's home on an errand, and passed away soon after the arrival of a physician. He was a native of Indiana, and was 77 years, 11 months and 9 days of age. The funeral was conducted at the M. E. Church on Wednesday afternoon by Rev. Robert Pow, and was attended by the surviving pioneer settlers, former neighbors and friends. Burial was in the Mentor Cemetery, with James Wilson, George Chambers, George Woodford, Dan Pierce, S. S. Andrus and A. Fradenburg acting as pallbearers. Mr. Hickman was an early settler in this vicinity, coming here fifty-four years ago. He was of a family of fourteen children, and is survived by two half sisters, and one brother, Francis Hickman, who now lives in Oregon. The only near relative in this vicinity is a nephew, Wm. Travis. Other relatives here to attend the funeral were a niece, Mrs. Lucy Wells of Davenport, Iowa, and two nieces from Altoona. He was an honest and upright man, industrious, and of a jovial disposition, and while not rich in worldly effects, he held the esteem of all who knew him. Mr. Hickman never married, but made his home alone on the farm where he died for many years. As infirmities came on he spent part of the time in the village, and last winter lived with his niece, Mrs. Myrtle McKeeth, now deceased, at La Crosse. Her death a few weeks ago was a great shock to him, and he returned to spend the summer on his place. Since early last fall he has been in very feeble health and his death, although coming suddenly last Sunday, was not unexpected. |
