Spencer Advance, Spencer, Wisconsin (27 Jan. 1881 - 14 Jul 1881), Elias W. Stevens, publisher; Elbert E. Stevens, Local Editor.
FRANK CRESSY came near being the victim of an unprofitable joke a few days since. A runner for some commercial house went to the depot to take the train, and just as the train steamed up to the station discovered that he had left his valise of samples at Gardner's store. He requested Frank to get the valise before the train left, if possible, and to do so he ran his horse to the store and back, when the runner seized his valise with the cheering remark, "You are a Christian." that was good enough in itself, but Frank couldn't ace how it would pay for hay and oats, so he followed his man into the car and requested something more tangible in the shape of a quarter. After hastily searching his pockets the traveler handed out sixteen cents, and train moved on. the same man was on the train next day, and having collected his thoughts handed Mr. Cressy another dime, which left him one cent ahead. Of course it was an oversight caused by the prospect of missing the train, though quite a joke on both of them; but peace reigns once more.
FRANK ran an express and dray service which he called the "Knickerbocker Transfer Line" out of an office in his wagon. He ran an advertisement September 22, 1882 in the Spencer paper which read: Baggage and freight transferred in scientific principles. All train met - orders filled on Sundays. Only line in city that gets there by day. He also said, "Cash down - no grumbling." Another advertisement read: I am prepared to draw anything from a prize tottery to a carload of coal. Anyone having any draying to do will do well to call on me. Business attended to promptly. He sold the business in 1883 to Emery Urich.

Spencer, Wis. News
News was received Sunday that Frank Cressy had died at Phoenix, Ariz., of hemorrhage of the lungs, and that his body would be sent back here for interment. He bad consumption and went west in December thinking he would be benefited by the change. Friends of his here received letters from him last week and the news of his death was quite a shock to them.
Follow-on in the Spencer Township section:
Sunday last Frank Cressy, an aged citizen of this town departed this life at his home. The funeral was a beautiful testimony of the love and esteem in which he was held, in the community which has been so many years his home.
