Biography of Galispy Washington Wendell (8 Apr 1851 - 8 Aug 1908)
Galispy was born 8 Apr, 1851 in Newburg, Washington Co., Wisconsin. He was the son of Washington W. and Mary A. (Smith) Wendell. As a child he lived for a few years in Minnesota, but spent the majority of his life in Wisconsin.
The 31st of August, 1869, Galispy married Melissa Butler in Ozaukee Co., Wisconsin. She was born in 1854 in Scott, Sheboygan, Wisconsin and her mother's name was Johanna. They had three children, Cora (1 Sep 1870, Magnolia, Wis.), Minnie E. (30 Apr 1871, Scott, Wis.) and Lila I. (b. Aug 1883).
About 1878, he moved to Spencer, Wisconsin where he had the first telegraph office in the village. He was a blacksmith who also built logging sleighs and wagons.
Galispy was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen of America, Camp No. 1124 which was chartered 22 Oct. 1894. In the early 1900's the organization built a hall on W. Main St. It was a facility which was often used for other purposes including school programs, Memorial Day celebration, basketball games, movies, dances and it even doubled as the communities' Municipal hall until one could be constructed. The group late consolidated with the Marshfield camp No. 1124, 6 May 1968.
Melissa died in 1892. Several years later, he moved to his farm one and a half miles south of town. In September 1906, he bought the Graves hardware store and carried on a prosperous business. That same year he married Kate (Lefever) Row on November 3rd. She was the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Blanchen).
Less than two years later, Aug. 8th, 1908, Galispy suffered a severe attack of indigestion and was treated by Dr. Soles. He seemed to improve but passed away after it reoccurred and the Dr. arrived to late to help him again. His death was fully unexpected and shocked the people of Spencer. His wife, Kate, is buried in the West Spencer Cemetery, Sherman Clark Co., Wisconsin where it can be assumed that Galispy and Melissa were also laid to rest.
