GEORGE BEACHWOOD, of section 36, Thorp Township, Clark County, was born in Niagara County, New York, July 22, 1852, the son of Gottfried Beachwood, deceased, a native of Prussia. The latter came to the United States in 1840, settling in Niagara County, New York, where he bought a portion of Grand Island, but, the title not proving good, he lost it. In 1850 he came to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, where he made a settlement, but returned to New York the next year. In 1857 he bought his family to this State, and settled on a farm in the thick woods.

George, our subject, left home when sixteen years of age, and traveled throughout Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Texas, making his own way. He worked on a raft boat on the Mississippi River for some time, and at various other occupations. In the summer of 1871 he landed in the central part of Illinois, where he worked in the harvest fields, and from that State all the way into Minnesota. In March, 1864, he came to this county, and in June, 1881, entered a homestead at Government prices. He now owns 120 acres, thirty-four of which is cleared. When he came to this county there were no roads except Indian trails and tote roads. For several falls the Indians camped near him, but were peaceable and friendly. Mr. Beachwood has worked in the woods nearly every winter for others, except for the past few years, when he has been engaged on his own account.

He was married October 21, 1880, to Marietta Boardman, who was born in Olmsted County, Minnesota, June 22, 1857, the daughter of Benoni Boardman, deceased. They have three children: William E., born July 28, 1881, Thomas, August 14, 1884 and Franklin, November 16, 1889.
