History of Clark County, Wisconsin (1918)

DAVID RIEDEL, a prosperous general farmer of Lynn Township, operating a farm of 120 acres in Section 20, was born in Schlasinn, Germany, April 16, 1849. His father, David, followed the occupation of farmer his native land. About 1865 the family emigrated to the United States, locating at Cedarberg, Ozaukee County, Wis., a place not many miles of Milwaukee. There David, Sr., and his family remained seven years, at the end of which time he came to Clark County, buying eighty acres of land, on which he resided until his death. David Riedel, Jr., subject of this sketch, attended school in Germany and was 16 years old when he came to America. He made his home with the family in Ozaukee County for some time, but after having learned the carpenter's trade, he went to Chicago soon after the great fire there in October, 1871, when men in every branch of the building line were in demand, and worked there for three years. He then came to Neillsville, worked at the carpenter's trade for a few years, and his father having arrived in the county, joined him on the farm.

On June 6, 1876, he was married to Augusta Earth, in Calumet County, Wis. She was born in 1856, daughter of Ernest Earth, a farmer of that county. After his marriage Mr. Riedel bought eighty acres of land near Granton, Clark County, and settled there, residing on it and operating a farm for eighteen years, when he bought his present place of 120 acres in Section 20. Here he is carrying on general farming with good financial results. He and his wife have seven children: Pauline, Adele, Ernest, Alvina, Eliza, Ahna and Martha.
