Christian Wollenberg was born March 17, 1843. The document above indicates he enlisted with Co. "L" in the 5th Regiment of the United States Artillery on December 29, 1862 serving as a Private and was discharged August 22, 1865. He died in September 27, 1916 and is buried in the Greenwood, Wisconsin City Cemetery. His son, H. J. Wollenberg of Alexandrine Av. Detroit, Michigan, was listed as his next of kin on his grave registration. His History of Clark County, Wisconsin (1918 Biography says he was in Company A, 129th New York Infantry. As a soldier in that unit, he became a part of the 8th Cavalry regiment which was became known as the 8th NY Cavalry (otherwise known as the "Rochester Regiment"). This unit was commanded by Col. Edmund M. Pope. Christian would have enlisted in the 129th, been part of the changeover to the 8th, and then left to be transferred to the 5th US Artillery. The 5th US Artillery was not a state formed regiment but a federal regiment. The 5th was actually considered a "Light Artillery" unit meaning that it was mobile. The 1934 History of Greenwood, WI lists Chris Wollenberg among their remembered Civil War Veterans. "Some of the well known members of the G. A. R. were: A. S. Eaton, George Meek, F. M. Carter, R. D. Hommel, E. G. Hartson, Larry Drinkwine, C. H. Cummings, J. E. Crane, Frank Abel, T. R. Vine, Carl Richelieu, Henry Decker, William Oelig, Joseph Gibson, Chris Wollenberg, Moses Babb, John Sanford, August Nagel, M. W. Varney, J. A. McCarty, C. W. Chandler, Joseph Palmer, F. G.
