Hiram W. & Amelia S. (Warner) Brintnall
Hiram W. Brintnall [Note]
Hiram W. Brintnall was born in Northumberland, Canada April 16, 1834. He had a mixed heritage with his father who was born in New York and his Irish born mother. Christmas Day, 1858, Hiram married Amelia S. Warner.
He fought in the Union Army during the Great Civil War as first a private and then as a Sgt. He was a member of both Co. "I" and "E" of the 27th Wis. Inf. which was organized in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His service began August 21, 1862 and he participated in the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the capture of Little Rock, the evacuation of Camden. At the end of the war, he was mustered out with his regiment on August 29, 1865. Fred Buker of Warner Township also fought with this regiment and recorded his memories in a Diary. George Wesley Courter of Reseburg, George Kesler of Colby, Henry Decker of Warner and Joseph E. Silsbey of Neillsville were all mustered into service with the 27th Wisconsin and reportedly served the same length of time. Apparently the war took a significant toll on Hiram as he spent some time in both the Mendoa and Wausau hospitals for mental issues.
At the time of the 1880 census, Hiram and his wife, Amelia S., were farming in Unity, Clark County, Wisconsin. This village was the result of the construction of the Wisconsin Central Railroad, and lays on both sides of the road--the west side in Clark County, in the the town of Unity; the other side in Princeton, Marathon County. It is on a hardwood ridge, the highest point of land between Stevens Point and Medford, in the midst of good farming land. By 1880, it was well laid out, its modernization evident by considerable sidewalking. The population of the village was over 300 and the township as a whole had more than 600 residents.
Hiram and Amelia were the parents of five children. Their three daughters were: 18 year old Jennee E., 12 year old Nelly S. and 10 year old Hattia K. Their two sons were: 20 year old Herbert and 7 year old Robert. We believe Herbert Brintnall was a photographer in Thorp, Wisconsin.
Their neighbors were 54 yr. old Samuel P. Williams of PA, his 38 yr. old wife, Mary L. Willisma who was born in NY and their Bohemian born farm laborer, Anson McCalic was born in WI of Bohemian-born parents. Thirty-seven year old, New York born, Gilford Smith and his thirty-two year old Wisconsin born wife, Mary S. also lived in their neighborhood and the Smiths boarded the area school teacher, Edith Ransom who was a mere sixteen years old.
Hiram Britnall died July 1, 1910 and was laid to rest in the Beaver Twp. Cemetery, Clark County, Wisconsin.

Hiram W. Brintnall was born 16 Apr 1834 in Northumberland, Canada, to a father born in NY and a mother born in Ireland. Christmas Day, 1858, Hiram married Amelia S., born during Dec 1840 in NY, the daughter of Chapen and Eliza Ann (Ackerman) Warner. When the 1860 Census was taken, the Brintnalls were living in Kewaskum, Washington Co., WI, with his wife, Amelia S., and their 8-month-old son. It was from this home that he enlisted as a Private in Co. E, 27th Inf. on 21 Aug 1862, also serving in Co. I. He was promoted to Full Sergeant before being mustered out 29 Aug 1865. He participated in the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the capture of Little Rock, and the evacuation of Camden. He is in Loyal Twp, Clark Co., WI with his growing family for the 1870 Census. A Homestead record dated 25 Apr 1877 shows Hiram acquiring 98 acres of property in sec. 6 and 7 of Unity Twp., and he is farming there in 1880 with his wife and children: Herbert James (b. 1859, m. Minnie Tiedemann), Jane Eliza Jennie (b. 1863, m. George Bowen), Nellie S. (b. 1868, m. Freeman Clark), Harriet R. Hattie (b. 1870, m. Frank Godfrey), and Robert A. (b. 1873). Luretta A. would follow 15 Aug 1880 (m. John Herman Vogt). Jennie, Hattie and Luretta all taught school in Clark Co. as young women. Herbert may have worked as a photographer in the area. Hiram passed away 1 Jul 1910 and was laid to rest in Beaver Twp Cemetery, Clark Co, WI. Several of the children had located to WA, and Amelia filed for her widows pension there in Aug 1910. She died 17 Sep 1913 in Seattle, WA. "Civil War Soldiers in the Heart of Clark Co., WI"

Hiram's picture was found in an old album which I assume came from the Strauchen family of Bleecker, Fulton, New York. Other Civil War soldiers displayed in the album are George Ingamells, Jacob Fernan, and Peter Dricken. They all joined the Union army in Wisconsin along with William E. Strauchen of NY. A huge box of pictures and albums were given to my mother (age 85) by her great aunt's step daughter. I assume the Strauchens are somehow connected to the step daughter, but not to me. I cherish the old photos I have of my ancestors, although many have no identifying notes. Cathy Douglas
