John Stanley Bogumill was born in Thorp, Wisconsin, January 26, 1895, the son of Joseph S. and Mary S. Cecilia (Younkins) Bogumill. His parents had married June 21, 1887 in Galitzin, PA and John was their third child and second son. His sister, the first born in the family was Gertrude (17 Mar 1888 in Galitzin, Cambrai, PA). Her birth was followed by Leon E. (20 Feb 1893), then John Stanley. Subsequently, Lucy Helen (12 Mar 1897), Elizabeth (27 Oct 1898), Thomas Richard (19 Oct 1900), Edward Leonard (13 Jun 1902), Sophia Irene (8 May 1904), Pauline Polly (13 Apr 1906), Frank J. (2 Jun 1910) and Kathryn Dudie (30 Apr 1917) were born.
An article in the Thorp Courier said of John S. Bgumill; "More civic pride hath no man nor given himself more willing, untiringly or ungainfully. No task of any worth was an effort as long as the result was of value to someone. The motive sincere with no thought of self. A toothless grin or a sticky kiss from a child or an appreciative smile from an old man or woman.
No one was ever too small in being or rank. One day John was seen opening a car door to cheer a tiny unknown crying baby in a basket whose mother was shopping. Who else would do so much for one so little?
One who loved life for the sheer enjoyment of the work he could do and the happiness he could bring to another.
Always an active member of any organization with no task too great or too menial.
Everybody's friend and everyone his friend. Always the good Samaritan. Mr. Thorp as he has been tagged by some.
No time to ever be ill. Now a long deserved rest but no doubt he must feel that there is so much to be done.
His kind face and jovial manner cannot be replaced anywhere.
He married Jeanette Johanna Antonette Huls April 13, 1915 at the St. Bernard's Church in Thorp, Clark Co., Wisconsin. She was also born in 1895. When John died January 30, 1959, he was laid to rest in the St. Bernard's Cemetery, Thorp, Clark Co., Wisconsin. Ten years later, Jeanette was buried beside him.
Their Children: Rosalla Anna, Clayborne "Booby" Bogumill, Ann Elizabeth, Patricia Marie & James J.
