Richard & Lillian V. (Newhouse) Biddle

Contributed by Lynn Mallen.

My Grandmother, Rose, and her Father, Richard Biddle.  She is a young woman in the picture. This is the only picture I have of my Great Grandfather. (Click on the photo to enlarge it)

Richard Biddle was born on May 22, 1859 to George Biddle Sr., Richard married Lillian V. Newhouse. They a farm in Clark County and the older brother, Peter had land right next to the Biddle farm, from what I understand Peter had a very nice farm. Richard and Lillian had eleven children, in this order; Richard (who was nicknamed Dickie and died in 1962), William (nickname of Willy), Dennis, Clara, Rose Marian (who was my grandmother), JoHanna, Johnny, Andrew, Frankie, Florence, and Elsie.

Richard and Lillian divorced and the oldest son, Richard (Dickie) really helped his father with the other children. I remember going to my Uncle Dickie's funeral as a child, he was well loved by his family.

William and Dennis married sisters, my Uncle Dennis and his wife Olga, took over the family farm and I have many fond memories of that farm and them, they were very kind people. I remember seeing pictures of the aftermath of tornado's that went through their farm and the stories of what happened. They had one son, Raymond, who was killed in the war in 1945, 2 girls and another son. William married and had two daughters and they  lived on a farm as well.

Clara never married and moved to Milwaukee and owned a beauty shop. Florence also lived her adult life in Milwaukee , she married and had one daughter, Darlene. Florence passed away in 2002.

Rose married, William Datus DeWorth, and had one stepson, Ernest and a daughter, Constance Ruth. They lived up in Marshville WI.

Elsie married and they owned a cheese factory. I remember them fondly and the cheese factory. I still can remember the aroma's of the cheese factory and sitting in their kitchen eating watermelon. They had 3 boys and 2 girls.

JoHanna married and had 2 sons.

Johnny married and had a daughter Dorothy. But I don't remember Johnny, I only remember his daughter, Dorothy and visiting her and her family at their horse ranch. I don't know if there was anymore children born to Johnny.

Andrew married and he had 2 sons and 1 daughter.

From what I remember most of the family stayed close to or in Thorp WI. As a child I remember thinking that the entire area was all Biddles. I do not know all the names or have anymore information yet but I am going to drive up and get more information from a book my mother, Constance, has.

As I get more information I will add it to this sketch. I know that the family came from England, the family split and some went to Barbados, then to the United States and some moved from England to Ontario Canada, as my great grandfather was born there. Then from there they moved to Wisconsin. The entire family has many relatives who we should be very proud of, as they played an important part in the United States history.
