Paul George Rossman was born March 16, 1842 (the VGR above has an incorrect year for his birth).  He enlisted with Co. "A" in the 9th Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry on September 14, 1861 serving as a Corporal and was discharged December 3, 1864.  He died January 24, 1918 and is buried in the Greenwood, Wisconsin City Cemetery.  His grandson, Roy Rossman of Withee, Wisconsin was listed as his next of kin on his grave registration.  *Please note his middle initial should be "G".

Family Notes

Paul George Rossman was born Mar. 16, 1842 in , Hesse Darmstadt, Germany and died Jan. 24, 1918 in Clark Co., Wis. In 1880 he was living in Lima Township, Sheboygan Co., Wis. He was a blacksmith and hotel proprietor.

He served with company "A" of the 9th Wis. Volunteer Infantry which was organized at Camp Sigel, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and mustered into the service of the United States October 26, 1861; it left the state on January 22, 1862, and proceeded to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, which was reached on the 29th of the same month.

On the 2nd of March the regiment, together with other portions of the Army in that territory, participated in various movements on the frontier until the 30th of September, when the Ninth was engaged in the battle at Newtonia, Missouri. On the 27th of November the division of which the Ninth was a part, advanced into Arkansas and was a part of the Union force present, but not actively engaged, at the battle of Prairie Grove, December 7, 1862. The Ninth participated in numerous expeditions during 1863 and 1864 in Arkansas, including the Camden Expedition March 23 - May 3, 1864, under General Steele, taking part in the battle of Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas, April 30, 1864, and a large number of minor engagements. The service of the regiment was chiefly rendered in Arkansas and Missouri, which included skirmishes, guarding of railways and frequent long and arduous marches and expeditions in various directions.

The Ninth was mustered out January 30, 1866, and was disbanded at Madison, Wisconsin, February 14, 1866.

*Paul had a son, Paul Robert Rossman (b: June 2, 1873 in Wis. -- d: May 19, 1943 in Idaho). Paul R. Rossman was the husband of Helene Humke.  And Helene Humke had a 1st cousin named Theodore J. Kippenhan (my paternal grandfather).

Obituary #1

Paul Rossman died last Thursday at his home in Greenwood at age 77.  He was a veteran of the civil war and is survived by his wife and daughters: Mrs. Lida Cochran, Mrs. Lily Cochran, Mrs. Nelda Nutting, all living out west; and Mrs. Darton of Loyal, and sons: Alfred, in Montana and William and Paul of Greenwood. He was uncle to E. J. Rossman and of Fred and Julius Rossman. A few years ago he served as deputy clerk of court under Fred Draper, and served as member of the county board for years. In years gone by when his brother Jake, ran the Rossman hotel here, where the Merchants now stands, he was in Neillsville more frequently, and leaves many old friends. Submitted by Kipp Kippenhan.

Rossman, Paul (16 MAR 1842 – 24 JAN 1918)

Paul Rossman, known as “Grandpa” Rossman, was born in Neirstein, Germany, March 16, 1842. He came to America in 1851, going to Plymouth, Sheboygan Co., Wis.

He enlisted on Sept. 14, 1861, being mustered into service at Camp Seigel, Milwaukee, Wis., Nov. 18, 1861 as a private in Co. A. Ninth Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry under Captains Andra and E.H. Horn and Col. Fredrick Solomen. He enlisted to serve three years or for the duration of the war. His regiment was assigned to the First Army Brigade of the Third Division of the Army of the Arkansas. He participated in the following battles, Newtonia, Prairie Grove, Spoonville, Little Missouri River, Prairie De Ann, Poison Springs, Camden Road and Jenkin’s Ferry. He was promoted to Corporal. His enlistment having expired he was mustered out of service on Dec. 2, 1864.

In 1865 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Russler of Sheboygan County. There he followed the blacksmith trade and in 1884 he moved to Clark County, Wis., where he resided on a farm seven miles east of Greenwood. Ten years later he move to the City of Greenwood, where he resided till the days of his death, which occurred on the morning of Jan. 24, 1918.

The deceased was a kind and loving husband and father and was liked by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife and the following children, William Rossman of Greenwood, Mrs. Geo. Cochran of Bemidji, Minn., Mrs. Thos. Cochran of Portland, Ore., Alfred L. Rossman of Priest River, Idaho, Paul R. Rossman of Greenwood, Wis., Mrs. H.L. Nutting of Brookings, Ore., Mrs. Arthur Darton of Loyal, Wis., and Roy P. Rossman who was brought up with the family since the death of his mother, which occurred when Roy was but a few days old. He is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, besides many friends.

The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon from the Woodmen Hall, Rev. Rainey officiating, with interment in the Greenwood Cemetery, where the Odd Fellows had charge of the burial.  Submitted by Stan Schwarze.
