Charles H. Bakeman, was a native of the state of New York, was born near Schenectady on April 9, 1844-45 to Christ Bakeman, a native of Germany.

As a mere boy, he enlisted in the 134th New York Vol. Inf. And served until the close of the conflict. He was one of a large family, and four brothers, besides himself, answered Lincoln's call for volunteers.

At the close of the war Mr. Bakeman came west, and in 1870 settled in Humbird, Clark County, Wisconsin, working in the woods winters for George W. King for several years. In the year 1872 Mr. Bakeman was united in marriage with Miss Sarah J. Smith. They made their first home on Mr. King's farm. He was a farmer who owned several farms, the last one being in the town of Cleveland, which was sold in 1909, when he moved into the village and gave up work on account of failing health.  He died of Lagrippe (lockjaw, Tetanus or infectious disease) and Enterocolitis (inflammation of the bowels) during the winter of 1911, February 28. 

Sarah J. Smith was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., Dec. 21, 1844, and when she was twelve years of age the family of which she was the oldest, moved to Missouri. After a few years in that state they moved to Illinois and thence to Wisconsin, settling near Black River Falls. On Christmas Day, 1872, she united in marriage with Mr. Charles Bakeman, and they lived nearly all their married life in and about Humbird, Clark County, Wis. Mr. Bakeman died in 1911, and since then the wife made her home alone in the little cottage in this village. One child was born to this union, which died at about two years of age. Mrs. Bakeman was ill only about a week, and died at the home of her brother D. E. Smith, on Wednesday, April 4, 1917.

Both Charles and Sarah were buried in the Garden Valley Cemetery.
