ASA VARNEY SOUTHARD
Asa Varney Southard was born on the third of January, 1831 in Mars Hill, Aroostook County, Maine, the son of William E. and Hannah Varney Southard. He and his brother, William served in the Civil War and both settled in Clark County, Wisconsin afterward, engaging in the business of farming. Asa was a private in the 11th Regiment of the Maine Infantry, enlisting on November 2, 1861. He married Helen Amanda Townsend on June 21, 1870 in Bradford, Penobscot County, Maine and they had eight children, Della, Ida May, Sarah Hannah, Warren Asa, Herbert A., William, John E. and George, who was called “Tom.”
Della married Elmer Jennings. Ida, who was born on May 1, 1871, married Charles Rose on Aug. 14, 1893, Sarah married Frederick Elder on Nov. 25, 1891, and John married Lena Davis. George met with a horrible logging accident at the age of 40, in which he was beheaded while two of his brothers watched helplessly. Sarah’s husband, Fred Elder, and John Southard left for the Alaskan gold fields in January of 1898.
Asa died on January 14, 1912 in Neillsville, and his wife, who was born in Bradford, Maine on March 16, 1846, died in Neillsville also, on February 15, 1924. Both are buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery, Pine Valley Township, Clark County, Wisconsin. His brother, William also is there, as well as his sons, John and Herbert and daughter, Ida.
