John Daniel Stannard

John Daniel Stannard, son of Daniel and Alvira Stannard, was born in New York on August 19, 1846. John served as a Corporal in Company K of the 117^th New York Infantry during the Civil War. He had a brother named Charles, who also was a Civil War veteran and he too lived in Clark County, Wisconsin after the war. His sisters were Mrs. Alma Marsh, Mrs. Helen Hapgood and Betsey. John moved to Neillsville in 1870 and married Emma Eyerly on October 20, 1875. They had three children, Harry D., who died in infancy, Grace A., who died when she was almost 16 years of age, and Frank, who lived in Seattle, Washington at the time of his father’s death, married Martha Saupe and gave John a grandson named Robert. Daughter Grace was born September 21, 1880 and son Frank was born June 24, 1886, both in Clark County, Wisconsin.

John was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was in the grocery business.

He died on September 23, 1922 and is buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery, Pine Valley Township, Clark County, Wisconsin. His parents, daughter and brother also are buried there.

Grandson Robert E. Stannard was born on March 13, 1910 in Chelan, Washington. He died May 2, 1986 in Tacoma, King County, Washington.

Johnny Stannard has returned from New York where he has been the past year, to take charge of J. L. Gates’s store in order that the latter may devote his time to the banking business. Johnny looks fresh and happy and seems to be nearly as glad of his return as the balance of us. Mr. H. D. Eyerly, who has been in the store for some time past, will now go to looking after his saw mills, of which he has two.

J. L. Gates and J. D. Stannard purchased the corner grocery and provision store owned by L. D. Lindsay.  They will take possession on Monday, repairing the building, making changes in the interior.

Mrs. French has put her store building, on the corner of Hewett and Fifth Street, in complete repair.  Now, she has rented the building to John Stannard, a successful grocer, who has moved into the new quarters.

J. D. Stannard, of Neillsville, met with a painful accident out at the Stockwell surveying camps near Spokeville.  Stannard was cooking and while carrying a pot of hot coffee, tripped, spilling the boiling coffee on his arm.  Dr. Richmond treated Stannard’s injuries and they needed to hire a new cook in the camp while the injury heals.

Neillsville’s Grand Old Xmas Tree.

Near the corner of Court and Fifth Streets in front of the old John Stannard residence stands an old pine tree. This tree was planted in 1862 by Wm. Berry. At the old settlers party held in this city, some years ago, measurements were made and recorded. The tree has shown rather a remarkable growth and bids fair to live to be a venerable old monarch of that part of town.
