Elijah Eaton represented Walworth County, Wisconsin as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1851 and 1858.
Elijah and Olive Eaton moved to Clark County from Black River Falls, Wisconsin in 1848 and were among the first pioneers to settle in "Eatontown", the area which eventually became Greenwood. They purchased the mill of Van Dusen & Waterman, and carried on that business for many years. About 1867, the idea of laying out a village was first discussed. That was accomplished June 6, 1871. William Welsch surveyed and platted the new village under the direction of S. R. Stafford and Elijah Eaton. The name "Greenwood" was suggested by Olive Miller, the daughter of John and Catherine Honeywell and lots were first purchase and improvements made. The number of dwellings present at the founding of the town were few in number and limited to the log houses and frame structures of settlers, like the Eatons, who had located before a village had been even remotely considered and it was quite some time before offers made by owners of lots were actually purchased. Mrs. B. F. Brown opened the first store and Alfred S. Eaton opened a Hardware Store after his Black River Falls business had burned to the ground. Eaton's store also served as the first post office.
Sixty-four year old, Elijah H. Eaton died December 4, during the winter of 1872. He was the first resident of Greenwood to die. His wife Olive died in the heat of August, 1892 at the age of sixty-three. Both of them are buried in the Greenwood City Cemetery, Greenwood, Wisconsin.
