Jacob W. & Harriett "Janet" (Bailey) Daugherty Greenwood, Clark County, Wisconsin
Jacob (Jun 1837, Adams Co., IL) was the son of Charles (1801, OH, d. 4 Oct 1880, WI) and Elizabeth (1802, NC, d. 15 Feb 1876, WI) Daugherty. His family moved to Grant Co., WI when he was 6 yrs. old and two years later resettled in Fennimore. Harriett Jane/Janet (16 Jul 1838, OH) and married Jacob, 31 Jan 1858. He was working as a lead miner in Paris, WI. She was the twenty-two yr. old daughter of David Charles and Rhoda (Daniels) Bailey. Two years the family grew with the birth of the Daugherty’s first son, Elmer E. (1862). During Harriett’s second pregnancy Jacob enlisted with Co. E, 35th Wis. Inf., 20 Feb 1864. Due to his injuries he was mustered out early, 10 Oct 1864. His two brothers also served: John (2d Wis. Cav., 1862, d. during hospitalization, 1864) and Thomas (25th Wis. Inf. was killed at the battle of Resaca, Georgia). Shortly after Jacob returned home, his son John F (1864) was born. In 1865 the family settled on a homestead near the Wisconsin River in Marietta, Crawford Co., WI. The following year their first daughter, Harriet R. B. “Hattie Belle” (1866) arrived. Huldah J. and Mary L. were born in 1868 after the family had resettled in Ellenboro. They only lived there a year before returning to their Marietta homestead. Mary did not live to celebrate Christmas with the family in 1871 because death had taken her on a cold winter day, 19 Feb 1871. Christmas had barely passed when their newest baby also died an early death, 29 Dec 1871. Their other children were: George (1872), Adda/Ona/Oney (1875) and Rhoda (1878). “Adda” hadn’t reached her sixth year when the family lost her, 28 Nov 1881. In 1902 they moved to Greenwood where their son Edgar was farming. During that time, Jacob was an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and served as Adjt. from 1902-1903 for the John A. Eaton Post. About 1905, they once again, they returned to Marietta. The New Year had barely begun when Harriett died 25 Jan 1909. After her death, Jacob lived with his daughter Hulda who’d married John Foust. Both Jacob and Harriett are now buried in Boydtown, WI.
*******************************************
Jacob W. Daugherty was born in June, 1837 in Adams Co., Illinois. He was the son of Charles and Elizabeth Daugherty. When he was six years olds, his parents relocated to Fair Play, Grant Co., Wisconsin and then just two years later, the family moved to Fennimore. Jacob was married at Fennimore, Wis., Jan. 31, 1858, to Harriett Jane/Janet Bailey, a native of Ohio who was born July, 1838, in Allen county. She was the daughter of David Charles and Rhoda (Daniels) Bailey. June 23rd, 1831 her parents had the distinction of obtaining the first marriage license ever issued in Allen County, Ohio. There was no Probate Judge at that time. The certificates were issued by a clerk. John Ward was acting in that capacity at that time. The record, which is apparently still held at the court house, was kept in a common blank book, there being no printed forms at that time.
Jacob and Harriett had nine children, six who lived to adulthood --- Elmer E. (aka: "Edward/Edgar", b. 1862), John F. (b: 1864), Hattie Bell (b: 1866), Huldah J. (b: 1868), George C. (b: 1872) and Rhoda E. (b: 1878). Three are buried --- Oney, Sarah and James. Jacob's father, Charles, died Oct. 4, 1880, at the age of seventy years, 7 months and 28 days. His mother, Elizabeth, died February 15, 1876. She was 73 years and 3 months old.
Jacob fought as a Private with Company E of the 35th Regiment for the Union Army during the great Civil War. He enlisted February 20, 1864 and was mustered out October 10, 1864, having served seven months and twenty days. He was discharged, on account of injuries received while on duty. Mr. Daugherty had two brothers in the army. John enlisted in the 2d Wisconsin Cavalry, in 1862, and died in hospital in 1864. Thomas was a member of the 25th regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers, and was killed at the battle of Resaca, Georgia.
In 1865 and at the age of twenty-eight, Jacob settled on section 14, town 8, range 4, of Marietta, Wisconsin, near the Wisconsin River. After living there five or six years; the family removed to Ellenboro, Grant county, where he stayed one year, then returned and located on section 24, town 8, range 4, where he lived until 1902. At that time, he and his wife moved to Greenwood, Wisconsin where their son Edgar was farming. During that time, Jacob was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and served as Adjt. of that organization from 1902-1903 for the John A. Eaton Post. Once again, they returned to Marietta where they are now buried. Marietta is located in the southeastern corner of Crawford county and is bounded on the north by the townships of Scott and Haney; on the east, by Richland county; on the south by Grant county and the town of Wauzeka; and on the west, by the townships of Wauzeka and Eastman and the Kickapoo River. In its earliest days the ridge lands were well timbered with white, red and black oak, hard and soft maple, basswood and some black walnut and butternut timber. The heads of the valleys were covered with a scrubby timber, with many wild plum and thornapple trees, while farther down in these valleys a heavy growth of good timber was found. The manufacture of lumber from these forests, furnished about the only means of employment among the early settlers, but once the land was cleared and stumped, farmers like Jacob prospered.
The 1900 Federal Census below shows Edgar & Rena and family living in Warner & Mead Townships, Clark County, Wisconsin. We do not know if Jacob and Harriett actually resided with this extended between 1902 and 1903 or if they lived in Greenwood, but we do know they did set up housekeeping in the area and were undoubtedly able to enjoy their son, his wife and grandchildren for some time.
