Lewis Henry & Anne (Haywood) Wilcox Greenwood, Eaton, Clark Co., Wisconsin
Signature Lewis Henry was born in Ripley Twp., Chautauqua Co., NY, 14 Nov 1842, the son of Charles Winthrop and Emily (Palmer) Wilcox. He came with his parents to Dodge Co., WI in 1853 and then to Waupaca Co. the following year. Two of his siblings, Winthrop and Charles A. Wilcox, later lived at Weyauwega, as did their mother. His brother, Sheldon Edgar Wilcox (b.1850 and married Sarah Ann Baker) lived in IA and his sister, Mary (Vernon) Mumbrue (1845) lived in Lind, WI. In 1861 Lewis enlisted as a private in Co. A, 8th Wis. Inf. and served through the war, mustering out 5 Sep 1865 at Demopolis, AL. He joined the John A. Eaton G.A.R. Post in 1902. In Oct 1867 he married Anna Louise, daughter of John and Mary (Cobb) Hayward, at Royalton, Waupaca Co., and became the father of 4 children: Walker and Pearl (James) Murphy, both of Fifield, Orpha (Thomas) Billings, who died at Fifield 25 Jan 1901, and Lewis E., who moved west. Lewis and Anna located in Park Falls in 1872 or 1873 and remained there a number of years. They moved to Greenwood, WI in 1894, where Lewis worked for the N. C. Foster Lumber Co. until the close of that lumbering business. He was well known by the local woodsmen and had many friends among them. He lived on a farm NE of town and when in the village, he usually made his home with Harry Hogue and family. Louis died 24 Dec 1907 and was buried at Fifield next to his daughter, Orpha. ***Lewis Henry Wilcox is also featured in the book, "Civil War Soldiers in the heart of Clark Co., Wisconsin."
