Joseph S. Palmer Warner Twp., Clark Co., Wisconsin
Joseph was born in Sheboygan Co., WI, Apr 1844, the oldest son of William and Esther Ann Palmer. He moved with his parents to Osceola Twp., Fond du Lac sometime in the 1850s. During the Civil War, he served with Co. I, 1st Wis. Inf., from 22 Sept 1861 to 13 Oct 1864. His unit served in KY, TN and GA. After the war, he married Jane Windsor. They lived in Osceola Twp, Fond du Lac Co. until relocating to Clark Co., WI in 1872. Joseph owned a farm in Sec. 9, York Twp., near what is now the intersection of H & K and they were among the first settlers in the area. A school house located at that intersection was initially called the “Palmer School” because it was adjacent to Joseph’s farm. It was later re-named the “Lincoln School.” The Palmers had 4 children: Perry, Bert Nathan, Levi and Grace. At the time of the 1880 Census, he and his first wife, Jane, and 2 sons, Perry and Levi were living in Warner. 14 Apr 1892, Jane died at Hemlock, Warner Twp. and was buried in the York Center Cemetery. After her death, Joseph’s sister-in-law (Sophronia Bassett) helped care for his family until he remarried in 1896. By 1900, Joseph and his second wife, Julia, and two step-children, Carrie and John were living in Warner where Joseph was operating a grist mill in Hemlock. Sometime after 1900, Joseph Palmer sold his farm and moved to WA State. In 1910 they were living in the Charleston Precinct, Kitsap Co., WA, where Joseph was a laborer in shipyard. At that time, he and Julia had been married 14 yrs. Joseph died 8 Dec 1918 in Charleston, WA at 75 yrs., 3 mos., and 13 da.
