HENRY GRIES DIES SUNDAY
 

Again the angel of death has visited our midst and this time has taken Mr. Henry Gries, one of our best known and highly respected citizens.

Mr. Gries was taken ill with pneumonia last Wednesday, and although everything possible was done to rid him of the disease, he passed away quietly from this earth Sunday afternoon Feb. 21, 1926 at 5:30 o'clock, having reached the age of 75 years, 4 months and 21 days.

Deceased was born at Germantown, Wis., Sept. 30, 1850, the son of Peter and Mary Gries. When he was six months old his parents moved to Manitowoc County, where he grew to manhood. On Feb. 26, 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Herr. They resided in Manitowoc County until the year of 1905 when they came to Greenwood and purchased what is now the C.A. Olson farm, 2 miles south of this city. He later sold this farm and then erected a set of buildings on what is now the John Emberson place, where the family resided until August 1919, when they moved to this city.

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gries of which two sons have preceded him in death, John dying in infancy and Henry dying in Dec. 1918, being a young man.

He leaves to mourn, his wife who is also quite ill, and the following children, Joseph of Osman, Manitowoc County Mary, Mrs. Albert Wagner of St. Naizanz, Wis. Theresa, Mrs. Walter Stabnow of Greenwood Martha, Mrs. Jim Syth of Greenwood Alice, Mrs. Robert Steifvater of Manitowoc, Wis. and Katherine, Mrs. Andrew Lindner of Greenwood. He also leaves two brothers, Anton of Thompson, Iowa, and John of Menomonie, Mich., one sister Mrs. Albert Axley of Manitowoc County and 30 grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends.

The entire community was saddened by the passing away of Mr. Gries as he was highly esteemed and respected by all whom had the pleasure of knowing him. In the community he was a supporter of all things good. In the Catholic Church, where he was a member, he was a tireless worker. He was a devoted husband and father and his highest aim was to bring happiness into his home.

Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Catholic Church yesterday forenoon and the body was laid to rest in the local Catholic Cemetery. Rev. S. P. Frye officiated.

A good father and neighbor is gone and many friends of the bereaved family extend their deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace.
