GEORGE SCHERER


Greenwood George Scherer, 67, of 119 Andrews St., Greenwood, Clark County, died shortly after admission at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1975 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.


Rites will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenwood. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert B. Houston, pastor. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.


Friends may call at the Rinka Funeral Home in Greenwood after 2 p.m. Thursday. There will be a prayer service at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.


Mr. Scherer was born March 27, 1908, in Jonsesdale and received his education at the former Eaton Center School. He farmed in the Town of Eaton from 1937 to 1952 and then worked at the Wuethrich Creamery until retiring in 1972.


Active in sports, Mr. Scherer managed and played for baseball teams in the Loyal-Greenwood area for a 40-year-span. He was an officer in the Cloverbelt Baseball League. In his honor the Greenwood Baseball Park was officially dedicated on July 4, 1973, as the George Scherer Athletic Park.


He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society.


Mr. Scherer married the former Carol Asplin on June 13, 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Neillsville. She survives.


Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Erven (Nancy) Sankey, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Chester (Susan) Turnquist, Greenwood, two sons, Richard, Greenwood, and Roger, Bloomington, Minn. a brother, Raymond, Neillsville Memorial Home two sisters, Mrs. Cecelia Bremer and Mrs. Leonard (Mary) Denk, both of Loyal 10 grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.


A brother preceded him in death.
