Neuenfeldt, Ferne Eloise (1916 - 1990)


Ferne Eloise Neuenfeldt was born Nov. 7, 1916, in Mondovi, Wis. She was the fourth child of the late Louis and Mary Ann Haunschild. She was educated in the Mondovi school system and earned a B.A. degree in elementary education at UW-Eau Claire. She continued her studies in a graduate program at UW-Eau Claire, Stevens Point, and Madison. She taught at Draper-Loretta, Colby, Madison and Greenwood a total of 42 years. In some case, she instructed four generations in one family, in kindergarten. She was the second oldest active teacher in Wisconsin when she retired in 1989.


She married Albert Abbie Neuenfeldt on Dec. 21, 1940. They were the parents of a son and a daughter and over the years warmly opened their home to several foster children. Her husband was the owner/editor of the former Greenwood Gleaner, and after his death she continued his work by authoring the Two Sense Worth column, taking photos and reporting news.


She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Ann's Society and a member of the Midstate Wisconsin Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. After retiring she did volunteer work for the school and library.


Visitation was held Tuesday, July 10, 1990, at Rinka Funeral Home from 5 to 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 11, 1990, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greenwood. Father Leonard Kaiser of St. John's Catholic Church, Marshfield officiated. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jon Haunschild, Dale Haunschild, Wayne Benson, Richard Scoop Druschke and Marty Hiller. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Allred, John Milack, Bud Brown and Norm Mayenschein.


Survivors include one son, Dennis Neuenfeldt, Milwaukee one daughter, Mrs. Jayne (Robert) Sequist, Onalaska one sister, Mrs. Audri (Charles) Allred, Sequim, Wa. two brothers, Milton, Spokane, Wa. Lyman, Oceanside, Calif. four granddaughters and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one brother, Harlan.


Rinka Funeral Home, Greenwood, was in charge of the arrangements.
