Appleyard, Lillian (1905 - 2001)


Lillian Appleyard, 96, Neillsville, Clark County, died on Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the Memorial Nursing Home, Neillsville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., on Friday, May 4, at the Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, and from 10 a.m., until time of services at 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 5, at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Neillsville. The Rev. James Gordon will officiate. Interment will be in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brent Appleyard, David Appleyard, George Appleyard, Ken Appleyard, Barry Hickethier, Jack Hickethier, Michael Hans, and Greg Appleyard.


Lilly Clara Elizabeth Thoma was born on Jan. 2, 1905, at Globe, to William B. and Bertha (nee Scheel) Thoma. She was baptized and also confirmed in Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Globe. She attended local schools, helped her parents, then kept house for her brother and three little boys for 4 years after the death of his wife. She married Fred Appleyard on sept. 23, 1928, by the Rev. Richard Motzkus, in Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Globe. They lived on their farm in the town of Pine Valley for 57 years. Her husband died on Aug. 15, 1978. She moved to Country View Apartments, Neillsville, in 1985, and in Dec. of 1993, she moved to the Neillsville Memorial Nursing Home. She loved gardening, sharing her flowers for Sunday worship services at church, and extra vegetables were shared with her neighbors and friends. She was a charter member of the Calvary Lutheran Church and belonged to its ladies aid. She was known for her deep-fried rolls and German potato salad at church luncheons and bazaars, and her crocheted snowflakes.


Survivors include five children, Marian (Truman) Hickethier, Rochester, Minn., Leland (Martie) Appleyard, Sparta, William (Patti) Appleyard, Rice Lake, Dale (Elvera) Appleyard, Denver, Colo., Larry (Eileen) Appleyard, Addison, Ill. 15 grandchildren three step-grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents her husband, Fred one son, Melvin and four brothers, George, Arthur, Frank, and John.


Memorials may be directed to the Neillsville Memorial Nursing Home or the Calvary Lutheran Church, Neillsville.


The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, is assisting the family with arrangements.
