J. VERNON SMITH, 71, Loyal, Clark County, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1978 at 3:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 26, 1978 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Loyal, with the Rev. Charles Sanford officiating. Interment was in the Loyal Cemetery. Rinka Funeral Home, Loyal, was in charge of arrangements.


Mr. Smith was born Aug. 18, 1907 in the Town of Eaton, Clark County to Sidney and Alice Smith. He attended Prosperity School and Loyal High School. He married Louise Millard on Sept. 3, 1928 at Loyal. After his marriage they lived at Loyal, Greenwood and Vesper. They farmed, he was an auctioneer and also worked at Wuethrich's Creamery. In 1958 they moved to Fond du Lac to Manage Fond du Lac County home until it closed. They were directors of Fond du Lac Senior Center. In 1973 they moved to Colby, where he was employed by Abby Pharmacy. In August of this year they moved to their present address. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this year.


Surviving besides his wife, Louise, are on daughter, Mrs. Edward (Virginia) Brown, Colby three sons, Vernon A. (Bud), Greenwood Eldon L. Arkansas City, Kan., Arnold G., Arkansas City, Kan. 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. One son, Ronald, died on July 30, 1970 and two brothers predeceased him.


The pallbearers were all grandsons Steve Brown, Tom Brown, Larry Brown, Chris Smith, Kenneth Smith, and Kevin Smith. Connie Meyer sang and Mrs. Feldt was the organist.
