Hubbard, Daniel V. (1821 - 1877)

Died, in this village (Neillsville, Clark County), Feb. 15, 1877, of apoplexy of the heart, Daniel V. Hubbard, aged 55 years and 8 months.

Mr. Hubbard was born in Cattaraugus County, N.Y. He came to Wisconsin while she was yet territory, and helped to establish civilization within her northern borders. For eighteen years he was a lumber pilot on the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers. Going to Colorado in 1860, he was there when the war broke out, and enlisted in the 2nd Colorado Calvary. He went for no high pay nor sought a high position. In the darkest days of the war, after the first battle of Bull Run, in his country's sorest need, he nobly responded to her call. For three years he followed the dear old flag through all the vicissitudes of war a part of the time fighting the Indians on the plains, under Kit Carson part of the time in the secret service, acting as independent scout.. It was while acting in this capacity that he contracted a disease of the stomach, which has wasted his strength and consumed his life. For thirteen years he has borne, with Christian fortitude and firmness, the most acute suffering going about his daily duties patiently and uncomplaining. Last spring he met with a serious accident which caused him months of intense suffering, resulting in permanent injury. He possessed an iron constitution and indomitable will. But the good God knew how much he should bear, and in his own good time, He took him in an instant to Himself. He was an upright man, of pure morals and good habits an affectionate husband and father. He had a firm belief in God as an overruling power. Of the future he knew nothing, therefore he preferred to trust it to an all wise Ruler. He made no profession of religion, but all who knew him can testify that was no canting hypocrite. God, not man, is the Judge of us all when this life is ended.
