Funeral services are at 2pm today at Attrell's Newberg Chapel for Chester Harvey "Chet" Harper, 84, a longtime Butteville resident who died Sunday, Oct. 29, 1989 at his home. Pastor Harold McGinnis of Butteville Community Church will officiate and concluding services with vault interment follow at Butteville Pioneer Cemetery.
He was born the son of Benjamin and Lucy (Piper) Harper on Oct 16, 1905, in Neillsville, Clark Co., Wisconsin. He grew up and attended schools in Wisconsin. He married Karla Christiansen on Nov 16, 1927 in Greenwood, Wis. They were married for 57 years before she preceded him in death on April 21, 1985.
The couple lived their early married life in Owen, Wis., where he worked for the Western Condensing Company. In 1942 they moved to Oregon and he resided in Butteville for 47 years. He and Kenny Allen together established Allen-Harper Machiner Inc. in Newberg and he retired in 1970 when he sold his share of the the company. At age 77, he went back to work for Allen Machinery as a research and development engineer and was actively designing food processing machinery until three weeks before his death.
He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in Butteville. He enjoyed studying the Bible, and his hobbies included bowling, fishing and building machinery. Surviving are his children and their spouses Mr. and Mrs. Foye Harper, Dundee, Mr. and Mrs. William Croco, Lebanon, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Loar, Camp Sherman, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Harper, Butteville and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Maldonado, Butteville, 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. A brother, James, a sister, Beulah Fischer, and great grandson, Timothy Croco preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. |
