The second annual convention of school boards will be held at Milwaukee on Dec. 27^th at the normal school.  Special railroad and hotel rates

W. L. Hemphill is looking after two camps at Withee, one at Butternut, one at Cadott, one near Greenwood and one in the eastern part of the county.  Bob hasn’t a feather ruffled, and handles these extensive affairs with ease and dispatch.

Elmer Brown, son of Sid Brown, has taken the agency for McCormick & Flattery of Green Bay, to buy, bale and ship hay from here, and has been looking up the market this week.  Cash will be paid at the farms, as bought the farmer to deliver the bales at the railroad cars.  The price offered is $8.00, and is very fair considering the times and the cheapness of oats, straw, bran, etc.  We understand this firm will put in an elevator here and purchase other produce next year, if there is the right sort of encouragement given them in hay sales this month. 

“Uncle Steve” Andrews says that his wood shed is full of good wood, his barn full of hay and straw, his team away working with Mitchell in the woods so he doesn’t have to watch him, so if his tobacco holds out till spring he will be all right for the winter, won’t have to get into Greenwood.

Mr. Krause has sided his blacksmith shop, in the community of Wilcox, which makes it more comfortable than last winter.

The N. C. Foster Lumber Co., of Fairchild, is dealer in lumber, shingles, moldings, lath and hardwood flooring.  They have a branch yard in Neillsville.  Also, they manufacture egg cases, honey boxes, etc.

December 1920

There will be a dance at Grant town hall on Friday night, Dec. 3.  It will be a Leap Year dance and the ladies are expected to buy the tickets.  Music by the Keller Orchestra; Tickets 75¢

Oyster stews are being served at the Sweet Shop.  Maple Nut Bulk Ice Cream is a Sunday Special.

According to figures given out by W. E. Barber, chairman of the state conservation commission, less than half the number of deer were killed this year than fell to the hunters last year.

C. C. Sniteman, popular local druggist says he is selling a lot of Bittertone, his famous tonic medicine.  People find it braces them up with new strength and vigor and they eat, sleep and feel better right away.

On Thanksgiving Day Mrs. Chris Kapfer entertained the Birthday Club and their husbands.  The men held a wood chopping bee for Mrs. Dave Williams and the ladies entertained themselves in their usual satisfactory manner.  A fine Thanksgiving dinner was served and the day turned out to be an exceptionally pleasant and happy one for all.

At $25 a ton for coal and $16 to $18 a cord for firewood this winter, there is every reason to believe that the farmers will be turning their attention to that part of the farm which is getting more and more popular – the woodlot.

500 men wanted at the Neillsville Bank Barber Shop for haircuts and shaves, first class work, two barbers.

The nimrods are returning from the northern woods, some with a buck and the rest with experience.  Fred, Ed and Walter Pollnow, the Marden boys and Fred Wade camped up in the woods for deer hunting. 

Fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the high school building in Fairchild, causing a loss estimated at $30,000.  Prompt action on the part of the school authorities saved the lives of all the children, who had been given thorough fire drills.

December 1945

Estimate 1200 deer taken during season in the county, most successful season in history.  One deer hunter fatality, Forrest Sternitzky, 18, Granton and two injured were Joe Strangfeld, 48, Rt. 3, Neillsville and Herb Long of Madison.

American Legion Auxiliary is sending carpet rags to hospitalized veterans who make them into rugs.  Anyone wanting to help in this work please wind your sewed rags into balls and leave at the J. C. Penny Store.

Glen Zilk is home from the wars.  He set out in 1942, on a ship which arrived some 12,000 persons.  He rounded the Cape of Good Hope, crossed the equator twice, landed in Bombay, went back through the Red Sea and landed in Africa.  He arrived there about the time Rommel made his greatest move.  He participated in the long drive through Africa and on through Sardinia and Italy.  Glen said he rode a motorcycle for three years; wore out three of them and left some skin along the way, otherwise the war had not been too rough on him.

Seven Neillsville high school football players were mentioned on the Cloverbelt league All-Conference selections.  Eggimas received right tackle berth on second squad.  Honorable mention; Schultz end; Stanley tackle; Diercks, guard; Tock, center; and Harder and Pscheidt, backs.  Two Thorp players chosen were Norman Maier and Mike Niedswicki.

Hazel Muir and Edward Holub were married Dec. 1, at Sunset Point, with Rev. Geo. W. Longenecker officiating. 

Elsie Genteman and Frank Neubecker where married Dec. 2 at the bride’s parents’ home, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Genteman, Town of Levis.

December 1970

Residents of Merrillan (pop. 591) are digging in their pockets and presenting the President with a 20-ft. white spruce tree for the White House yuletide this year.  The select tree will be a gift of Geo. And Cal Frelk, Christmas tree producers.

The 1970 county deer hunting kill was 933, (legal buck count 692 and party deer count was 241).

Kurt Listeman presented a piano recital for residents of the Bryan Home dedicated to memories of Thanksgiving in New England.  The first Thanksgiving took place only 12 miles from Listeman’s birthplace.  A resident of Neillsville for the past 75 years, Listeman presented a recital in the same “Home” monthly for the past 15 years, with plans that the final presentation be Dec. of this year.
