Roads Blocked
A big snowstorm on Wednesday and Thursday of last week completely stopped auto traffic on all highways in Central and Northern Wisconsin. The extremely cold weather interfered with opening the roads in the counties in which snow removal had been voted by county boards, but at this writing, Tuesday traffic is generally on the move again.
Snow plowing was held up somewhat by a break on the engine of the snowplow caterpillar which delayed the big plow, but it was repaired rapidly and cleaned out No. 10 to the county line east and about six miles west of Neillsville, then north on No. 73 and is working in the north end of the county. A further delay was caused by the fact that the two plows ordered for the tractors by the county arrived Friday. It was found that they did not fit, so Highway Commissioner Weyhmiller canceled the order and on Monday sent the two tractors across country to Wausau to have them fitted with plows at a factory in Wausau which makes them.
He also expects to secure another big plow there and it is probable that by Wednesday or Thursday all these plows will be shooting snow out of the main highways in the county.

High School lads’ scrappy bunch
Friday night the Neillsville high school opened its basketball season at the armory by taking on the Eau Claire high school team. Eau Claire had the state championship team last year and several that team were playing in this year’s team. It would naturally seem that the game would develop into a walk-away for Eau Claire and the score of 25 to 9 would no doubt bear that out, but as a matter of fact, it was a good game every inch of the way. Neillsville has a bunch of small boys but what they lacked in size they made up in aggressiveness. They started the scoring and the crowd sat up and took notice. Eau Claire of course, came right back and took the lead and were never headed, but they had to work for every point they made.
Comparing the stature of the two teams, it seemed that Neillsville did not have a chance, but they kept their larger opponents on the jump all the time and the two teams put up a contest which was always full of thrills. The home boys put up a fight for every point and they deserve a lot of credit for the brand of basketball they put up. They are a scrappy bunch and when pitted against a team anywhere near their size, will be quite hard to beat.
As the curtain raiser for the game Friday night, the Neillsville and Granton sophomore teams put on a game which closed with a 17 to 14 victory for Granton, but this was a mighty close game also and put the crowd in good temper for the game that followed.

Teachers’ meetings were postponed:
Owing to the heavy snowstorm and drifts, blockading all roads in the county, the Home Talent Tournament meetings and the Teachers Demonstration meetings scheduled last week by County Superintendent Margaret Van Natta, had to be called off. The dates for the Tournament meetings, have not been fixed, but will be held at a late date. Besides the drifted roads, another reason for deferring these meetings was the fact that Miss Rockwell, who was coming from Madison to assist with these meetings, had to go to the hospital with a broken arm, and with the train service broken up no substitute could be sent at that time.

Change on Route 2
Postmaster Martin has received notice that after January 1, a change will be made on Rural Route No. 2, giving four more miles to that route. The carrier will serve two miles south from Day Corner, a mile west past the Krumpeck farm, also the mile west from Day Corner to the Levis town hall.

Odd Fellow reunion
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs had a grand reunion at their lodge rooms Saturday night. An oyster supper was served, and dancing was a part of the program. Although the snow blockaded the country roads there were quite a number from the country and several from Granton. About 125 were in attendance.

School Notes
Miss Wright returned to her work on Monday morning after a week’s illness. Mrs. Meyers took her place during her absence.
The accurate basket shooting ability of the Eau Claire team was too much for our boys last Friday evening. Although Neillsville guarded closely and led Eau Claire by 2 to 0 at the end of the first quarter, the final score was 9 to 25 in favor of the visitors.
On Tuesday night this week the boys will play at Greenwood and on Thursday night at Abbotsford. On Thursday evening, Dec. 22nd, the return game with Greenwood will be played here. This will complete four games of our ten-game schedule.

Help the ladies Community Club!
At the Kiwanis Club dinner Monday, the appeal of the Ladies Community Club was presented, asking that all help possible be given to the Club in preparing Christmas gifts for needy children, old people and others.
It seemed to be the general belief of the Kiwanis members that a portion of the funds raised to finance the community Christmas tree and program might be used to help the work of the Ladies Community Club. Each winter for many years the women of this club have collected, repaired and refitted garments, secured needed food supplies and other necessities for poor families not only in Neillsville, but also for miles around. They have also tried at Christmas time to bring some little extra cheer into homes where it is needed.
Anyone wishing to help in this cause can call upon Mrs. S.F. Hewett, president of the Club.

Harry Hewett in auto accident
Harry Hewett, former chief of police, and Harry Edwards, who recently resigned as patrolman here, were in an automobile accident about four miles south of Westfield at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning. Mr. Hewett received a slight scratch on his head, while the top of Edward’s head was severely cut when he was thrown against one of the wooden supports as the car rolled over on its side. - Stevens Point Journal

Reading Circle meetings
County Superintendent Margaret Van Natta announces the following Teacher’s Reading Circle meetings: Neillsville, Jan. 7; Thorp and Owen, Jan. 14; Greenwood and Loyal, Jan. 28; Granton and Abbotsford, Jan. 28. Teachers will attend the meeting which is most convenient.

E.R. Anding spent Tuesday between trains with the J.P. Breseman family.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schlinsog, a baby boy, Dec. 6. Mrs. Ara Lee is taking care of mother and babe.
The remains of Mrs. E.A Sole, who died Friday, were taken to Rosendale Monday morning for burial. Memorial services were held at the Union Church Sunday evening. Rev. Mallory and Rev. Lambright officiated.
Fred Bartz and family and Alfred Bartz and two daughters spent Sunday at the Wm. Bartz home.
Dr. Housley of Neillsville was professionally called in town last Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kurth and family spent Sunday with his mother Mrs. Ottilie Kurth.
R. Webster of Humbird was a guest at the Fred Hart home Friday night and Saturday.
A basketball game was played between Spencer and Granton Friday. The score was 4 to 12 in Granton’s favor.
The Ladies Aid are planning a sale and 25¢ supper at the church next Friday afternoon and evening.
Mrs. H.E. Williams visited with Neillsville friends Saturday.
Mrs. I. Higgins and Miss Lenore Hart were home from Romadka for the weekend.
Anton Havelick is again manager of the Connor Lumber Yard. He began work Saturday.
John Garbush pf Random Lake and Dahlia and Florence Garbush took dinner with the Herman Garbush family.
Miss Mollie Grasser is caring for Mrs. Emma Wood who is reported to be slowly on the gain.
A large crowd gathered Saturday evening to shivaree Mr. and Mrs. Erhart Witte.
Fred Bartz left Monday for Brillion to attend the funeral of his uncle.
Rev. S.J. Lambright was a Sunday evening guest at the E.R Wonsor home.

Several of the young folks attended a Bunco party at the home of Henry Garbisch Sunday evening.
Fred Capella, Ed. Sternitzky and son Arnold autoed to Neillsville last week Tuesday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. R. Ure and Mrs. W. Sternitzky were Marshfield callers last Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Johnson called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Dankemyer Tuesday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Art Short and family and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bender and little son visited at the Chas. Helm home Monday of last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bartz and family visited at the Ferd. Helm home Monday evening of last week.
A party was given in the Louis Rach cheese factory Saturday night.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dietrich and family, who were visiting friends and relatives here the past week, returned to their home at Watertown last week.

On account of sickness, Mrs. Sparks could not entertain the club this month, so were delightfully entertained by Mrs. Ed Zimmendorf.
Ed. Zimmendorf and Eric Stube transacted business in Pittsville Monday.
Mrs. A. Anderson came home from Milwaukee for the Christmas holidays.
Hope and Thelma Anderson were home from Pittsville High School for the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gall visited Mr. and Mrs. Jenni Sunday afternoon. George Burdick went to Lindsey Tuesday.
Our mail man has a hard time getting through with the mail last week as some of the drifts were very deep.

The big blizzard that struck us last week kept everybody at home for a few days.
E. M. Schoenfeld was at Loyal on Saturday.
R.A. Zickert and son Martin, Henry Grosmeck, A.C. Vandeberg and Horace Vandeberg were at Neillsville Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Grant Turner and son Gene came from Chicago Saturday to visit the home folks and spend the holidays.
E. M. Schoenfeld was at Granton Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Art Diercks and Mrs. Ed. Diercks were at Granton last Friday.
Bill Davis is helping Victor Turner with the chores at Bill Marten’s.

Dr. Claflin was one of the unfortunate ones who were caught in Wednesday’s storm and had to spend the night at the Wrensch home.
Mrs. Otto Filitz and Edna Munson called on Mrs. Chas. Musil Sunday.
The Levis Community Club will meet with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kutchy Friday evening of this week.
Several Levis ladies attended the candy and cake demonstration by Miss Edna Hoffman last Tuesday at the Kiwanis room. This is her last meeting until spring.

The displays of holiday goods in Neillsville stores this year have never been surpassed for quality, quantity and attractive prices. The amount and variety of practical merchandise as well as those articles that might be classed as luxurious, make the stores here attractive places for Christmas shopping. It will pay purchasers at this time of year to come many miles to look over these opportunities.

A small crowd attended the oyster stew at the town hall Sunday, because of the weather.
Mr. and Mrs. Jess Schultz and son spent Sunday at the Wm. Groves home.
Quite a crowd attended the Ladies Aid at the Chris Feutz home Saturday. It had been postponed from Thursday until Saturday because of the blizzard.
Jesse Wilding was seen going east at a great speed Sunday with his gray horse and cutter.
Mrs. Ralph Short and daughter were callers at the Ed. Short home Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. Wm. Groves and son attended the Ladies Aid at the Feutz home Saturday.
