Charges Against Hewett Withdrawn

The police board of Stevens Point arrived at a settlement last week with Harry Hewett, Chief of Police, by withdrawing all charges against him, accepting his resignation to take effect January 1, 1928, and allowing him his full salary. The matter is still held up in the city council which has not yet appropriated money to pay Mr. Hewett’s bill.

 Annual Christmas tree Friday night

A community Christmas program will be put on in Neillsville like those of previous years, beginning at 7 o’clock Friday evening, December 23. The exercises will be held at the O’Neill House Corner, the living Christmas tree being decorated and lighted for the occasion.

The program will be brief and is as follows:

Prayer by Rev. Longenecker.

Scripture reading, Rev. Lambright.

Address by Atty. W.J. Rush.

Interspersed will be community singing by all present, led by a group of men. After this, sacks of candy and nuts will be distributed to the children.

It will be necessary to begin the program promptly at 7 o’clock to finish before 8 o’clock when the program given by the Indian School at the Opera House, will begin.

The community program and gifts for children are for all who can come either from the country or city. The heavy snows will interfere somewhat, with people from a distance getting in, but this will doubtless change the plans for community meetings in future years, some scheme being worked out so that the gifts may be widespread about the country.

Snowplow running

A new large snowplow shipped in from Wausau, was unloaded and started out Monday; this makes two large plows and two smaller ones propelled by trucks, operating in the county. If the weather continues clear, most of the state and county trunk lines will soon be open. The session of the county board at which snow removal was voted on, closed Nov. 19, and the severe weather and big snows set in the first week in December, before the new machinery could be secured and the old put in condition. This, together with the fact that the small plows on arrival were found not to fi t, all delayed the work and the continued drifting made it difficult. However, if fair weather continues, the situation will soon be better.

 Christmas seal sale

The mail sale of Christmas seals has gone over in a very satisfactory manner. There are still a few who have neglected to return either their seals or a remittance for them. We shall appreciate it if you will take care of that within the next week. Quite a number sent currency in payment for theirs and to serve as a receipt, I am putting in each of the banks a list of the names of those whose returns have reached me to date. Anyone interested in knowing whether their money reached me and has been promptly credited may refer to this list. The response has been very fi ne in the mail sale, and I want to express my personal appreciation of this excellent cooperation.

County treasurers will collect income tax:

Just to keep Miss Mary Rude and other county treasurers in Wisconsin busy, the income tax law was amended last winter making the collection of such tax a part of the duties of the county treasurers instead of town, city and village treasurers as heretofore.

The Tax Commission and the Assessor of Incomes will certify to the county treasurer the amount of income tax assessable be to individuals and the county treasurer will notify such persons by mail and income taxes will be paid directly to the county treasurer.

For those who figure January 1 as the beginning of their fiscal year, the income taxes will be due on June 1. Thirty days after they are due, they become delinquent and a 2 percent penalty is exacted, and 1 percent is added for each month delinquent thereafter. The local district where the taxpayer resides gets 50 percent of the tax, the state receives 40 percent and the county 10 percent.
