Reed School Open For Tours

By Peter Spicer

Historic Reed School, located east of Neillsville off USH 10, is now open for tours each weekend.  Tours began Saturday, May 1, and will be held each weekend throughout the spring and summer, said Wisconsin Historical Society Reed School Site Director Dale Williams.

The school will be open Saturday and Sunday each weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Reed School is one of 10 historic sites throughout the state operated by the historical society, said Williams. Many school groups are visiting Reed School this spring before school gets out for the summer, said Williams.

Reed School is decorated to resemble how it looked in 1939, the year Gordon Smith attended first grade while living with his grandparents, said Williams.  Smith has funded Reed School to keep it open for the public.

Of the 10 historical sites, Reed School is the only one from the 20th century, said Williams, who explained many of the others are from the 19th century.

For information about tours or for other questions, call Williams at his Wisconsin Dells office at 608-253-3523.
