George Brooks' Family

1884 Tragedy

The saddest and most terrible event that ever occurred in this county was the work of lightning Tuesday afternoon between 3 and 4 o’clock at the George Brooks’ home on Pleasant Ridge, about six miles east of Neillsville.

Mr. and Mrs. Brooks with their two boys and youngest daughter were in the city and had left their two eldest daughters, Miss Cora, 13 and Miss Effie, 16, to keep the house.

A heavy rain storm came in the afternoon and the young ladies had gone into the cellar for safety fearing a cyclone, when lightning struck the house, setting it on fire and striking Miss Effie dead and stunning Miss Cora who remained unconscious for she knows not how long.

When consciousness returned, she was partially paralyzed and barely managed to drag herself up the stairway, opening the latch with her teeth, and escape from the burning house.

The fire was far advanced before neighbors comprehended the situation and all was lost and the body of the dead girl badly consumed.
