Olson's Lumber Train (circa 1907)

Arne C. Olson sailed to the United States in August of 1871 from Grue, Norway, a farming community located just outside Oslo.  He found employment in the Greenwood, Wisconsin area and the following year was joined by his wife, Ellen, and one year old son, Oluf.  Besides homesteading 110 acres of fertile farm land in Mayville Township, Clark Co., Wisconsin, erecting two large barns, several outbuildings and a fine brick home, he owned and operated a productive saw mill.  He is the bearded gentleman in the photo above and his son Fred is to his right.  We believe another son, Julius, is seated to his left.  This particular "Lumber Train" was loaded with 20,000 ft. of Wisconsin timber which had been cut at the Olson Saw Mill

Arne & Ellen raised eight sons.  The oldest, Oluf, and the seventh son, Fred (pictured above), both married daughters of Barbara & F. M. Tuttle who were also residents of Mayville and engaged in the lumber business. (photo)
