---- Hansen, Trygg John (September 28, 1945 - January 9, 2011)
Trygg John Hansen, age 65, Jim Falls, died of a heart attack Sunday, Jan. 9, at his home.
Trygg was publisher of the Courier-Sentinel since 1974. He was an avid golfer with five or six holes in one and an active member of the Cornell Lions Club.
Trygg was born on September 28, 1945 in Jacksonville, Fla., the son of Henry L. and Charlotte H. Hansen. He was a 1963 graduate of Murray High School, St. Paul, Minn., where he lettered in football, hockey and tennis. In 1967 he graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. At St. Olaf he majored in history, lettered in hockey and was captain of the hockey team.
From 1967 to 1969 he was in the United States Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam. During training at Quantico, Va., he began his career in journalism, serving as assistant editor of the base newspaper.
He studied journalism at the University of Minnesota from 1969 to 1972. During that time he worked in photo labs and did freelance photography. In 1972 he began as a writer for the Cornell Courier and soon became editor. He purchased the Courier and the Cadott Sentinel in 1974 and has been publisher since, holding that position longer than anyone else.
He was proud of the surrounding communities and his newspaper and felt that he continued the service of his predecessors. Two previous editors and publishers, Howard Sims and Walter Brovald, were professors Trygg studied under at the University of Minnesota and who set a high standard for community journalism. Trygg is survived by his mother, Charlotte; brothers, Mark (Brenda) and David (Karen Lilley); niece and nephews, Britta, KeLl, Trygve (Jeanne), Per and Kip; and two grandnieces. Trygg was preceded in death by his father, Henry.
A memorial service was held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Cornell, on Thursday, Jan. 13.
Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 14 at St. Anthony Park Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minn.
Memorials can be made to the Cornell Lions Club. |
