HOTCHKISS, County Clerk, Eau Claire, was born Oct. 24, 1841, in the town of Homer, Cortland Co., N. Y., and lived with his parents until his thirteenth year, when he came West. He returned to New York in 1859, where, in April, l86l, he enlisted in Co. B, 23d N. Y. V. I., serving until May 22, 1863; he then came to Eau Claire, and after a residence here of fifteen months, returned to New York, and enlisted in Co. B, 189th N. Y. V. I. He was elected orderly of the company, and afterward promoted to second lieutenant. At the battle of Gravelly Run, on March 31, 1865, he was wounded in his right ankle, and the result was the amputation of his leg. He left the service July 11, 1865. He was married in Belvidere, N. Y., June 22, 1865, to Almeda E. Smith, who was born in the town of West, Allegany Co., N. Y. They have four children — Hattie M., Leroy, Harry B. and Willie O. Mr. Hotchkiss was Justice of the Peace in the town of Union; Town Clerk of West Eau Claire before the city organization, and Postmaster of West Eau Claire about three years; he was serving when the office was discontinued in 1872. He was elected County Clerk in 1876, and re-elected in 1878 and 1880.
