Former Town of Holway resident Joseph W. Hatlestad, 98, Birnamwood, died Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Langlade Memorial Hospital emergency room in Antigo, where he had been taken by ambulance from his residence in Shawano County.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in the Town of Holway, with Pastor Kris Bjerke-Ulliman officiating. Interment will be at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church Cemetery in the Town of Holway. Pallbearers will be Tina and Tim Gilbert, Julie Duwe and Heather and Jason Hatlestad.
Joseph Hatlestad was born September 3, 1910 in Beloit to the late Otto and Ida (Nordby) Hatlestad.
He attended Greenwood area schools and Town of Holway elementary schools.
On June 19, 1943 in Minneapolis, Minn., he married Stella Petersen, who preceded him in death on May 7, 2007. He was a dairy farmer in the Town of Holway for over 50 years and also did woods work while farming.
He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where he was a past treasurer, was a past member of Farmer's Union Co-op, and had served on the Holway town board. He enjoyed reading, gardening and animals.
Survivors include two sons, Paul (Patricia) of Wausau and Phil (Ranae) of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; a son-in-law, Bill Fry of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Eleanor DeWitt of Creston, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tina Gilbert, Julie Duwe, Jon and Karin Fry and Heather and Jason Hatlestad; and two great-grandsons, Mario Duwe and Daniel Hatlestad.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Fry in 1995; a grandson, Ryan Hatlestad in 2003; three brothers, Carl, Alfred and Bernard; and three sisters, Agnes Olson, Edna Hong and Margaret Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in his name to Taylor County Humane Society.
Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.
