William "Bill" H. Poirier, 75, Medford, died Thursday, Oct. 9 at Memorial Nursing Home in Medford, where he had resided the past 21 years, most recently under the care of his family and Hope Hospice.

 

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 12 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joseph Stefancin officiating. Cremainal inurnment will take place at a later date in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford.


William Poirier was born July 12, 1933 in Milwaukee to the late Gene Joseph and Agnes Mary (Kutchide) Poirier Sr. He attended Brookside Elementary School.


On June 18, 1955 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, he married Marcella "Marcie" C. Hartman, who survives.

 

He worked at Hurd for 17 years as a general laborer. In 1970 he started employment at Liberty Homes in Dorchester and worked there until September 1977 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and ill health forced his retirement. After school he also worked part-time at Thomas Floral in Medford until 1977. In his retirement, from 1982 to 1987 he operated M&J Baits where he enjoyed bargaining with people.


He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and past treasurer for the AFLCIO, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. He enjoyed fishing and it was a tradition to take his children on Saturday nights to Chelsea Lake. He liked to snowmobile, ride motorcycle and play cards including cribbage and sheepshead. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. While in the nursing home, he became a Packers and Brewers fan.


In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Jim (Becky) of Rib Lake, Jeannie (John) Deml and Julie (Robert) Frombach, both of Medford, and Jack (Donna) of Stetsonville; two sisters, Jeanette (Bernard) Strobach and Joyce (Lester) Noland, both of Medford; a grandson, Micah (Melissa) Poirier of Mosinee; eight granddaughters, Samantha (Brad) Blasel of Dorchester, Lacey (Chad) Liske, Britney Deml, Stephanie Poirier and Jade, Seairra and Auburn Frombach, all of Medford and Brandi Poirier of Stetsonville; two great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene; and a sister, Mary in infancy.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in his name be made to Hope Hospice or Memorial Nursing Home.

 

Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.
