Margaret Ella Baker, 93, of Gilman, died Monday, July 19 at Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Stanley.

She was born on June 18, 1917 in Sauk Centre, Minn., the daughter of the late John and Ella (Pratt) Avelsgaard.

She grew up in the area and later married Edward "Pat" L. Baker on November 13, 1935 in Blue Grass, Minn. Soon thereafter the couple moved to the Gilman area where they farmed. Margaret worked at Drangle Cheese as a lab technician and later worked at Romig's as a clerk. She retired in 1981.


She was an active member at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, belonging to the Women's Guild and the church Bazaar. Margaret liked flowers, gardening and crocheting afghans.


She is survived by her children, Patricia Jackson and Karen (Jesse) Jones, both of Cullman, Ala., and Eleanor Warner, Robert (Sharon) Baker and Russell (Beverly) Baker, all of Gilman; a daughter-in-law, Gladys Baker of Gilman; 31 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Margaret is preceded in death by her husband on December 29, 1960; her parents; her son Thomas; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and eight siblings, Gladys, Hazel, Clifford, Iva, Mamie, Harold, Leonard and Daniel.


A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 23, 2010 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Gilman, with Father John Long officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Gilman Funeral Home with an 8 p.m. rosary, and from 9 a.m. until time of service Friday morning at the funeral home.
