Former Westboro resident Bernice A. Johnson, 89, Mt. Greenwood, Ill., died
Tuesday, Nov. 10 at Providence Nursing Home in Crestwood, Ill.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Nov. 14 at Good Shepherd
Catholic Church in Rib Lake, with Father Otto Bucher officiating. Interment
was at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Westboro.
 
The former Bernice Poncek was born January 31, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minn.,
to the late Bruno and Josephine (Kolodziejczyk) Poncek. When she was an
infant, her family moved to Westboro where she grew up and attended grade
school and high school. She then moved to Chicago, Ill.
 
On March 7, 1942, she married Paul Johnson, who preceded her in death in
1999. They lived in Mt. Greenwood until retirement when they moved to
Holliday, Fla. She moved back to Illinois after the death of her husband.
 
She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, flowers, playing bingo and spending
time with her grandchildren.
 
Survivors include four children, Donna Thulis of Homewood, Ill., Ronald (Marge) of Homer Glenn, Ill., Gordon (Christine) of Tinley Park, Ill., and Edward (Judy) of Pensacola, Fla.; a brother, John (Geraldine) of Westboro; five sisters, Sophie Poncek of Illinois, Evangeline (Tom) Culbertson of Downers Grove, Ill., Mary (John) Korienek of Mt. Greenwood, Julie Kampa of Greendale and Margaret Boyd of Mokena, Ill.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
 
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a
granddaughter, Sandy Demonbreun; a brother, Joseph (Eleanor); and three
sisters, Nellie (Merwin) Krause, Ann (Harold) Wennerstrand and Betty (Willie) Lennartz.
 
Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family
with arrangements.
