Marlin "Tom" D. Carlson, age 91, of New Richmond, died Monday, Sept. 21,
2009, at his home.
 
Marlin was born, the son of David and Ruth (Larson), on June 4, 1918, in
Taylor County, Wis.
 
He grew up on his family's dairy farms, first in the Town of Holway and
later in the Perkinstown area.
 
In the 1930s, Marlin left home to join the Civilian Conservation Corps,
working as a group leader on soil conservation projects in Pierce County.
Many of the concrete erosion control dams they built are still functioning.
 
Marlin entered the Army in March of 1941. He served as a Staff Sergeant
throughout World War II, going to le Shima as part of the planned invasion
of mainland Japan.
 
On June 25, 1942, he was married to Helen M. Asp in a ceremony held at Eau
Claire, Wis. After the war, Marlin went to work for his father-in-law,
Alfred Asp, at the New Richmond Granite Works. He later owned and managed
the business into his 80s.
 
Marlin was a member of the First Lutheran Church in New Richmond, serving in
many capacities through the years. He enjoyed his family, his work, deer
hunting, natural history and traveling, especially to visit his daughter at
the many national parks where her husband was stationed.
 
Marlin is preceded in death by his parents, David and Ruth Carlson; brother,
Jerry Carlson; sisters, Lois Carlson, Florence Tyter and Mabel Notogiacomo.
 
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Carlson; children, David
(Carol) Carlson of Eau Claire, Lois (John) Lounsbury of McAllister, Mont.,
Eric (Jane) Carlson of Lake Elmo, Minn., and Rolf (Jeanine) Carlson of New
Richmond; grandchildren, Margaret Carlson, Rebecca Carlson, Jensena Carlson,
Matthew Carlson and Amanda Carlson; brothers, Lester (Laura) Carlson of
Medford and Roy (Sandy) Carlson of Reedsburg; and sisters, Gladys Pawelko of
McHenry, Ill., and Ethel Miller of Racine; as well as many nieces, nephews,
relatives and friends.
 
Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church of New Richmond.
 
A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 26 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran
Church in New Richmond. Interment was at the New Richmond Cemetery.
 
Arrangements were with Beebe Mortuary of New Richmond.
